Well, thinking the most of the bugs were worked out, I installed XP SP2. Blew my system off.
Locked out my video card and settings, and otherwise just screwed things up.
On Thief it crashed the system to a complete freeze. Nada. No cursor, black screen, no reset. Needed to do a power-off restart to get back to the system.
Fortunately I had a "restore" point just before the install (I always manually set one before I install ANY new apps or updates.
So I guess I'll just pass on SP2.

Err, do you mean SP3? Or are you sill clinging on to SP1, or what?

I meant exactly what I said:
I installed XP SP2. Blew my system off.And yes, I am, and will be running SP1 for now.
I do ocassionally mistate myself. But not that often.

Give it another try after troubleshooting what went wrong. SP2 is a troublesome beast at first but your PC is way better off with it than if you stick to SP1. :)

Ok, I just thought you misstated because SP3 just came out.
So, wow, still on SP1. I thought there were some critical vulnerabilities that SP2 addressed that allowed a remote attacker to own your system in short order.
Maybe you could post your system specs, somebody might be able to figure out why SP2 is buggering your system.

Have you tried to slipstream SP2 into your orginal media and then make seperate installation with it? If you have enough room in your hard disk(s), you could try this method.

I do selective updates. Many (a lot in fact) of the updates I don't need. SP2 just won't work with my Video card, even with updated drivers. It defaults to 800 - 600 even though the video properties, according to the card, are 1280 - 1224 32 bit.
Without SP2 I can, and do run THIEF at 1224-768 with no problems. SP2 also fights me with other applications.
I am planning to setup a "Slipstream" disc for future use, but am not about to go through all that clean, re-install, re-install apps etc. at the this time.
I've got lots of HDD space (750 GIG internal in 5 HDD), Brain, but really don't have the time at the moment to try that. Good idea, however.
