As much of a running joke it has become, Daikatana is 15 years in the past. If every musician, actor or director was raked over the coals for their one big flop as hard as Romero, we wouldn't have much entertainment in our lives. He has lived it down.

Timing this campaign around the release of Doom 4 will definitely play a lot into how things turn out!
That'll be really interesting. There were apparently A LOT of people moaning about DOOM4 MP Beta, complaining it's not 'teh oldschool' or something. Well, they're in luck! Here's their chance to show everyone that people actually want an oldschool shooter and that there's a market for it. Or is it just a vocal minority? We shall see.

I go by cold hard logic.
Games while Romero was at id - Fantastic
Games after he left - From mixed bag (Doom 3) to meh.
When it comes to the great programmers (eg John Carmack). They tend to get false views of themselves that what they do is far more important than what game designers come up with.
Game designers sometimes fall into this trap as well.
The truth is that each is equally important, with neither being more important than the other. Good luck trying to get that through to the people in question though.
I don't think any programmer really thinks that. What they do is a whole lot harder than most other things, but I think most programmers, having a good brain and all, realize that a real life game won't go very far without something that appeals to the people (like game design and good aesthetic). Carmack himself cares about moving the the tech forward, and not producing actual games. That's why being at Oculus is a far better fit for him. Now he has a whole community of game producers for his tech and he doesn't have to hassle with details like directing a single game (or demo of a game) himself anymore.

Except this is more like one member of a successful band going solo, producing one album that everyone hated, and then asking people to help fund the new album.
I'm not saying it can't be great -- I'd sure as hell hope he's learned lessons and gotten wiser (and he has made some small games since then, I know) -- but I don't feel inspired to throw money at him either.
I'll be slightly astonished if they get the kind of money they're asking for.

Agreeing with Shadowcat here - if Romero had put out something of substance since the disaster that was Daikatana, all would be forgotten. But it's hard to believe he can actually produce anything decent anymore given his recent track record. Read his wikipedia entry, it's filled with new projects he started up or joined that never materialized or that he dropped out of.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm pulling for the guy. And I hope his new project has at least some effort put into single player.

Based on what I gathered from the Twitch stream, the 10 hour campaign will be the main focus. The challenge modes and multiplayer maps are secondary. Also, it will be balanced towards single player gameplay, not with e-sports or competitive gaming in mind.
I'd say the biggest concern for me right now is whether they are able to put together a strong enough team. As much as people tend to get singled out and put on a pedestal in game dev, one person isn't going to make a game of this size. John Romero might be enough to design the levels, but someone will have to write the systems and implement the gameplay.

I have to admit, I'm somewhat intrigued reading about the Boxel and how it allows you to change the weather and time of day. I'm not sure what purpose that would serve in gameplay but it sounds quite unique and not something I've seen before. Is anybody else aware of any shooter game that's given you an ability like that?
