This was one of my favorite levels in my initial playthough or two. (In later runs, it's kind of a drag.) The atmosphere, the nostalgia, the intimacy of the conversation. It almost seems weird to not be able to offer another go when she talks about her experience in the graveyard. :p
But many players dislike this level, and I can't really say I blame them, either. So, I'm thinking, could it be possible to keep some of the strengths of it, while mitigating the weaknesses? And what would it take?
One thing that would've helped me directly is if the mystery wasn't always the same. If the various things you can find weren't always in the same places.
Another thing might've been more interactivity with Nicolette; she's basically just an infodump in this level, you can never say anything to her, nor in any way direct the conversation or even tone of the conversation, whether sympathetically drawing her out or demanding that she try to concentrate on helping rather than meandering recollections.
Do you think a level like this even belongs in an FPS/RPG? Was Deus Ex the peak of possible experience, or is there something you'd've improved, given the time and opportunity?

Absolutely. It provides some much-needed downtime from all the regularly-scheduled Deus Ex-ing, with a hard shift away from the usual gameplay into something a bit different -- an empty house to explore and a mystery to uncover. More than that, it also does a big job in exposing the more human element of the Illuminati -- they really were just a few like-minded friends who had a vision for the world and a steadily loosening grasp on the ability to realize that vision, and not just some shadowy faceless secret society.

So... That's it? No relevant feedback, just dethtoll attacking a hypothetical strawman like it had been a serious argument?
Man, I miss the Illuminati forum sometimes.

The fuck? That was a legitimate answer and you dismiss it because it's a "hypothetical strawman"?
Punch yourself in the fucking face for wasting my time.

Seriously, Pyrian, WTF?! dethtoll, I sometimes think you're quick to jump to the conclusion that everyone gangs up on you for no good reason, but whether I'm right or wrong to think so, Pyrian's reply in this thread is almost surreal. You give a thoughtful reply and he pisses on your shoes? As I've said: WTF?!

Yeah. I get that Dethtoll can be a tad acerbic at times, but this wasn't one of those times.

the illuminati are real theyre probably the reason for that court order that prevents me from ever buying another rockstar game and also that other one about not going into gamestop anymore it has to be the illuminati i mean think about it WAKE UP PEOPLE

I gotta be honest, I hated the level. It's very unengaging, just find a key to open the cellar, then go activate the computer. Big whoop. No enemies (until the end), very little supplies, very little to do. It feels like it's there just to advance the story, but not serve as a "real" mission.
Even though I also dislike the gas station (feels like rushed filler to me), it at least was about solving a problem in a sticky situation using your James Bond cunning and supplies, rather than to find a needle in a haystack just for some dialog and being allowed to advance to the next map.
