lols I wonder if they've tried going outside? You can even find bioluminescence if you know where to look. (Although sadly they are out of luck when it comes to flying on dinosaur bird things and plugging their hair into things.)

Hollywood is preparing to re-release some past hits, including Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in 3-D following the record-breaking success of Avatar.
Studio executives are drawing up schedules of popular films that will be “retro-fitted” with 3-D technology after the science fiction blockbuster, directed by James Cameron, last week became the second highest grossing movie of all time.
Quote:
It may be beaten to the screen by a revamped version of Star Wars. George Lucas, the director, spent $13m filming the original in 1976, added special effects in 1997 and 2004, and will now spend another $10m to change it into a 3-D spectacular.
“George cannot leave it alone,” said an associate. “He is salivating at the opportunity to play with it again. This time the Death Star is really going to explode all over the audience and leave them gasping.”

Exploding sparkly balls of death in your face? Sounds like the last time I went to a disco. Damn thing near fell on my head.
ON the other hand... a money shot sounds like the most appropriate and literal use for 3D at this point.
Count me in! Just leave the grizzled and creatively bankrupt old men out first.

Hi guys, been a while since I've posted on com chat.
Saw Avatar today. Ignoring the 'dances with wolves' plotline, this has got to be the best made movie I've ever seen.
What really stood out for me was the detail. Talk about hi-res textures! The computer animation is so intricate and natural, just amazing.
The 3D-ness contributed to the overall immersion, rather than distracting via gimmics.
All in all, I agree with those who say this is a new benchmark in movie making. They just need an original story next time.

Re: Star Wars in 3D, my guess is that Uncle George won't be able to resist the temptation to make other, non 3D changes to the movies as well.
(sigh)

All of them get RotJ-style musical numbers now.

After 12 hours I'm still quite speechless about the quality of the technology. I watched it on a big screen in Real3D and the detail of the helicopters and desks and plants was just breathtaking. The colours, oh my the colours of that forest!
Shame that the forest went from being a constant death threat to being a rather benign paradise so quickly. There should have been random deaths and flesh eating plants!
I didn't see any racism myself, though I don't consider self criticism to be racism. Truth is that us 'ethnic europeans' have gone all around the world exploiting land which belongs to other people, people who do not have the means to defend themselves. Though I agree this theme has been done to death.
I'm surprised so many saw the natives as north american. I saw (
http://www.wired.com/science/planetearth/magazine/15-11/ps_amazon) south americans whose amazon forrest is being cut down.
The story line of an outsider coming in to save the tribe is just a classic way of introducing the viewer to the world of the story. We
are the outsider who comes into that new strange world. And at first we (like Jake) are clumsy and stupid, not understanding anything which is happening around us. We see the story unfold through Jake's eyes, in a sense become Jake. Taking the viewer along that journey and making the main character the hero at the end is just classic hollywood feel good fodder.
EDIT:
The thing about the big bomb failing to destroy the tree: It was meant to be a daisy cutter bomb, wasn't it? They don't work so well inside a wreck on the ground, do they?
Besides, if realism had any place in these movies, the 2nd part would be a 15min short film showing the humans coming back with massive overkill and 'nuking' the whole area.
