The trailer is impressive and I'm curious if the story is actually quite dark in the 2nd half since it looks like the humans use Sam Worthington's character in a war or something.
It looks nice; but remember - its a 3d movie above all else so obviously on the 2d screens its going to look like any other pixar movie.
SE: how was the 3d element to it?
SubJeff on 22/8/2009 at 08:04
I already said.
Actually the 3D element had more of an effect on me than I 1st though - I've been thinking about it a bit.
In the scenes where it worked really, really well - the computer/avataring room and that wonderful night scene - if you had complete field of vision coverage it would give the illusion of actually being there because you are seeing what a person who was standing there (where the camera was) would see. Unlike sans-3D films where you are looking "in" on the world.
That's also because of the distance those scenes are shot from. Some of the wider scenery shots would be different, though I suppose it could still give the illusions of being on the planet.
That's why this is an iMax must for me.
Shakey -When the 3 aliens are facing those rhino things the one telling Sam to stand his ground and not shoot is Weaver. She isn't the main female (who kills the dog things) - that's voiced by Zoe whassername from Star Trek. She's clearly the love interest.
ZymeAddict - lol. I agree.

The trailer looks like a high concept sci-fi cartoon.
Not particularly interested, but Cameron can direct thrilling action sequences like no other and I'm mildly interested in the 3d aspect so I'll probably see it.

So to anyone who's seen it, is it just the furry wish-fulfillment fantasy it seems, or does it actually have some merit?
Please tell me there's no yiffing.
SubJeff on 25/8/2009 at 23:26
No one has seen it - it isn't out yet.

Okay, so some folks turn themselves into World of Warcraft characters and then space marines try to kill them all?
I can't imagine that's the plot of the film but that's what the trailer made it seem like.
Watched Dark Angel a bit earlier this year - it wasn't awful or anything, but not really worth watching. I enjoyed Terminator, but haven't seen anything else from Cameron that even qualified as "very good" (though it's worth noting that I've never seen T2).

I read one of Cameron's old treatment drafts for Avatar a couple of years ago and I didn't like it.
Massive spoilers may follow. I can't be sure how much of this actually made it into the film, but don't read unless you aren't going to watch it: I think the woman that Sigourney plays dies in the end after falling from a great height. Then magically she comes back to life because the planet is alive and decided to save her. Every native creature to Pandora had been attacking humans as if they were a virus, ransacking everything in their path for resources. All of the animals can also connect to the planet and each other via a socket thingy that hooks up to their nervous systems, (and yes, there's an alien sex scene). The main character (can't remember his name) dies, but he gets to live inside his alien avatar forever and ever, among bunnies and sunshine, and humans are evil, yayyyyy!

Terminator 2 is hands-down his best film.
Aliens doesn't hold up nearly as well nowadays from an action film point of view, but it still is extremely important just in the impact it's had on sci fi media in the last 25 years.
@ Neb:
Great. Sounds like typical "Gaia theory" nonsense. Of course it's what I expected, but I hoped he might try to offer
something different.

its starcraft meets world of warcraft, blizzard ought to sue 'em.
am guessing this is the human version of independance day, only they're the aliens invading a planet to strip it of all resources. Although thats a bit stupid, the best planets to strip of resources would be the ones that don't have an atmosphere, as in no atmosphere, no oceans covering resources, no extended use of fuel to punch through atmosphere on leaving with the goods. Although if they're still using rockets to get there, where they get all the fuel from.

Considering what Starcraft and Warcraft pretty much owe nearly their entire exist to, maybe not.
