Also, please explain to me how Avatar is racist.
Just because it's racist against humans doesn't mean it isn't racist. It's claimed that the Navi are higher up on the evolutionary ladder than humans, ffs.
That's not how evolution works.
It's also in the time-honored tradition of "White man joins native people, and swiftly becomes better at everything than they do" narratives. Which is pretty ironic for a movie that spends so much time decrying colonialism, and deifies its noble savages to a ridiculous degree.
Which isn't to say that Fafhrd's claim that it's worse than that appalling turdmonster Transformers 2 isn't utter nonsense, of course.

I'd been hoping this movie would flop harder than Battlefield Earth but I guess I can't have everything for my birthday. :(

Avatar is like the BioShock of movies. A shallow and dumb, but colourful, movie, accompanied by reality distorting hype.

This movie's an effortlessly brilliant watch experience, pure visual poetry that only Cameroon can match ever, it's 3D and puts you into the story because it's used in the expository scenes and dialogue not jsut to throw things at the audience, Sigorney Waever still kilss ass and everyone else does a knock-up job! also :thumb: long live Cameroon KING OF THE FCUKING WORLD!!!

I'll watch this after Christmas. I'm too busy to watch a 3 hour movie that's not Schindler's List, and that movie knew how to pace shit the fuck out so the ass cramp later wasn't all that awful.
I mean, Inglourious Basterds wasn't terrible by any stretch, but that tavern scene took fucking hours to deliver its payoff (yes i really hold this opinion) and by the end I could feel every wrinkle in my underwear crinkling my tender buttflesh, and I know this is the KING OF THE WORLD here, and Aliens and T2 and The Abyss rocked as all get out, but you guys tell me if, after all these years, it's worth gathering all your friends in one place and jumping queues to get tickets for and chapping your ass over

Were they serving beer at the cinema? Or are you just drunk on the awesomeness of Avatar?

Pretty much this. Noble Savage (and pretty much all of the Na'vi's cultural traits that make them Noble Savages are lifted wholesale from Native American as Noble Savage stereotypes) + Thank God for White People. (
http://io9.com/5422666/when-will-white-people-stop-making-movies-like-avatar?skyline=true&s=i) This essay goes into a lot more detail about it. Though it does overlook the fact that every single Na'vi with a speaking part is played by either an African- or Native-American, and that with the exception of Michelle Rodriguez and Dileep Rao, all of the humans are white.

Don't get me wrong. As I said, on a purely technical level, Avatar is kind of amazing. It's just that all of that technique was in service of boring the shit out of me with the most predictable story ever, populated with the most boring characters ever.

I'm going to have to see this in 2D. 3D is no good, my eyes do not work with 3D movies. The goggles do nothing. :(
