Yeah not bad at all. Not very Bondesque though; but too little fun and gadgets is a far lesser sin than too many. Undecided about what's his name, it was a fine job of acting no doubt, but bring back Timothy Dalton. Also Bond needs to go on a first aid course. Attempts to resuscitate...
Eva Green
...were pathetic. Frankly I think he's pretty well culpable.
Umm, 12a rating - perhaps I'm out of touch, but I don't think so. Her Majesty's censor needs a head check.
The phone message was that the
CIA were going to pick him up in the morning.
Saw the film last night and really liked it. Some of the product placement may have been a little overdone but it was bearable, and the stunts and effects were a mile away from the CGI-fest that was Die Another Day.
Daniel Craig was as good as I had expected - unlike some of his predecessors he actually bothered to do some acting rather than spend his time prancing around trying to look cool.
I did have some reservations on the story, but to be fair most of them come straight from the book. The whole
Vesper turning out to be a double agent all along
never really convinced me. Also, like the book, the film does suffer a bit by not having a real endgame. It's nice to have the story revealed through Bond's investigations, rather than cutting away to the bad guy's secret lair every now and then, but it leaves the audience with no idea of where the story's going. Instead of having Bond faced with an objective and then seeing how he copes with it, all you can do is hold on and see what happens next.
The other point I have may be treasonous, as it involves a national institution: yes, I'm talking about Judi Dench. When I heard about the plans for the film, I hoped they'd go all the way and get someone else to play M. Dame Judi is a great actress, having played all the top roles in theatre, but I've never found her convincing when having to deliver lines of technobabble or giving dire warnings about the threat of international terrorism.
The reviews from fans seem to be quite mixed, but it's difficult to please everyone: firstly you have huge difference between the books and the films, but then even with the films there's so much variation. Some have latched onto the likes of You Only Live Twice as the definitive Bond film, complete with tons of gadgets and sprawling enemy HQs with uniformed soldiers, whereas my idea of a good film is closer to The Living Daylights.

Saw it last night. How very refreshing. Craig was a very different Bond to what I had imagined but damnit he was a real person instead of the pastiche of a parody that Brosnan was. Very gritty and very different and I enjoyed it alot. I think this will go down as one of the greats. Card game was great.

Pretty good Jimmy Bund, he does a better job than Brosnan, who as someone told me a few days ago now looks like someone's dad doing a Bond impression at a party. Daniel Craig was a lot grittier, and a total hard bastard, especially when he was
getting the crap beaten out of his plums by LeChiffre
Pretty good overall though!
Regarding that, I was so happy to finally see a torture that was simple, direct, and that WORKED. It wasn't one of those, "Well we'll just LEAVE YOU ALONE, tied you to this table surrounded by shark infested water while this laser beam/miniature saw slowly makes its' way towards you" god-awful-stupid-moron plans.
Grit is good. I liked the scene with
the freerunner doing all sorts of fancy crap because all Bond did was do what FUCKING MADE SENSE, like crash through a flimsy wall.
Also, M gets hard on his ass when he
blows up the embassy.
And she should. He's a secret agent. A SECRET agent. It was always pretty weird that somebody who's supposed go about being subtle blows up entire mountains and buildings and never really gets reprimanded for it. AND IT FINALLY HAPPENED.
Not that I didn't like the old movies, but this one was refreshing for reasons stated above. :)

I'm keen to see this and will probably get a babysitter so I can get out for it, but I must say I'm pissed off that yet another movie has to include a torture scene. It seems since 24, no show involving anyone to do with covert operations can go without a prolonged torture sequence. It's getting a bit overdone.

The sadistic torture scene is in the original novel though, which was written more than 50 years ago now, so you could hardly say it was drawing inspiration from modern sources.

Is Casino Royale worth reading? Or are any of Fleming's novels for that matter?

I wasn't aware of that. I withdraw my grumblings completely.
Aja: I've read the Man with the Golden Gun and while I was only mildly surprised to find it an absolute departure from what I knew as Bond, it was far superior to the movies in nearly every way. I've always meant to read more.

Finally got around to seeing this yesterday, it's pretty much all been said but I'll lend weight to the SEE IT NOW camp.
Also:
Was slightly dubious when my girl turns to me and says, "That's Richard Branson" in the airport sequence, but then the subsequent volume of Virgin Atlantic planes landing and taxiing in the background made me suspect that it actually was. Subsequently, Internet said (

I'm also going to reiterate what a gorgeous, gorgeous car the DBS is. Ironic that for once Bond's car is helping him with the masquerade of being a respectable fellow wealthy enough to enter a $10 million card game, justifying MI6 providing him with one (even if Bond does know his cover is blown from the word Go) - but we see so little of it and it meets such a miserable end. Loving the way they worked the old DB5 in there, too.
