Hydrogen peroxide 30% will burn, and turn your skin pure white.

Ultimately I have a lot of faith in Nolan, he lost a little credibility with me for The Prestige but at least he improved his visual directing in that movie which might mean good things for the action segments of The Dark Knight. I'm not saying I'd like to really see any of the classic renditions of the Joker, just one that makes sense.

Wait a second, holy shit, let's back up here a second:
That's fucking BONER from Growing Pains?
The little brat from the last season goes on to become Leonardo fuckin' DiCaprio, and poor Boner is left playing a 2-bit Joker in what amounts to not much more than a fan fic, and then the only job he can get is as a leftover in a B movie written by Chekhov from Star Trek and starring every washed up sci fi actor of the past 40 years, and he only got that because Chekhov's his dad.
He's got to be hating life right now.

Well said. It was uneasy to give Batman back his distinct dark style after what Schumacher has done to the series. So the best option was to take the stuff and redefine it from the beginning. The new Batman is less fantastic as the Schumacher's work has escalated Burton's dark fantasy to the level of grotesque childish bizarreness, but the neo-noir approach suits the Dark Knight well so far. We shall see how it goes with the new installment.
I'm still not sure if I like this style more than Burton's though. Burton had very interesting aesthetic feeling for Batman as a comic film - anybody makes comic films these days and 90 of them are crap - yes Robert Rodriguez, I'm looking at you too. Burton's Batmans have proved themselves to be very durable. No doubt this is because of really good actors in them - Nicholson, Pfeiffer, DeVito, as opposed to later pubertal new-gen of Silverstone, O'Donnel, average performance of average Lee Jones, traditional long faces of Carrey, Kidman reduced to role of a shallow pseudointellectual vamp and Mr. Bodybuilding Hamlet himself as a cherry on top of a disgusting cake.

DeVito was rubbish though. WTS was that mini-Batmobile he had? Batman 2 was nonsense. The plot didn't even make any sense. It's not even redeemed by Michelle and really the only good thing about it at all was the Souxsie track and maybe the fact that no-one had decided to flood the film with neon crap.

And what it means in detail, if you could elaborate?
If B.Returns was criticized for something the most then for being too dark and sadistic. And too "psychological" too. Box office success was appealing and reviews were generally positive towards artistic direction, but it wasn't a good stuff to sell toys to kids, surely - that's why the style has changed. This is very "adult" comic movie, more than the first one.
DeVito was nominated for best Villain and Pfeifer for most desirable femme fatale - if you take MTV Awards seriously.
