I've never... - by PraetorJudis

I've never played UW as a mage, so I fired up Virtual PC last night and started a new game.
Sheesh! It's going to take me twice as long to forge my way through it at this rate (Note: That is not a complaint).
When I play as a fighter, I usually only upgrade Sword, Attack and Defense.
As a mage, I'm contemplating only upgrading Mana, Casting, and Lore.
Any tips and advice?

I've never done it either, I keep meaning to. Does your magic regenerate faster, or do you just have more of it per mana point?
The only real problem I can foresee is how the hell you'll kill Mors Gotha in Britannia - heck, even Patterson would probably be problematic - you'll need quite a stash of wands, unless you're planning to Magic Arrow her to death, as melee will be as effective as throwing squirrels at her.

It's FUN smoking people with huge fireballs after you get the flam stone.

Damn straight. And Vas-Kal-Corp makes for some limited amusement too.

Hey DCLXVI, I'm talking Stygian Abyss here, not Labyrinth.

Its really hard. Particularly as bieng an utter weakling early in the game means that you spend most of your time running from any physical confrontations.

That's the case with most RPGs, though... one typically trades early difficulty for insane power later in the game when you play as a pure Mage-type :)

Ah... Well, in that case knock yourself out, you should be fine as soon as you get that Flam rune (and as far as level 11).

If you want to make it easier on yourself, start off with a fighter character and spend all your experience points on mana and casting. Magic within the castle levels is restricted anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of a disadvantage.

Thanks Al, but I'm talking about the FIRST Underworld game. Also, I've alreayd played a fighter with mage tendancies. Just never a pure mage. Which is what I'm trying now.
