I've never played Invisible War. - by T-Smith

The thing about this game is that for all the astoundingly crap aspects of Deus Ex, its got enough redeeming aspects to make it enduring. IW is just missing or cutting back on quite a few of those aspects.
Sounds like a middling distinction and I suppose it is. But it seems important to remember it's not like DX was without flaws, it mainly got around them by having more of everything (ugly levels? Make them bigger! Bad voice acting? More dialogue!)
IW just kinda makes Deus Exs successes and failures more obvious, rather than being out and out crap. I think it's actually worth playing for the...I can't say story exactly, or plot. It's more the ways the story expands on the ideas of the first game. At it's core there's some very interesting stuff going on and you've almost got to play through it more than once and see things from a couple of different angles to get a handle on this world and what's going on. That's arguably poor design, but the results are pretty good I find.
How you play it makes a difference too. If the first was an FPS/RPG then this is an FPS/Adventure Game and should be played accordingly; take it slow, even when they tell you to hurry up, explore the options. If you start out just horsing around and trashing the place like a spoiled child you really will hate it. Plenty of time for that later on.
Basically if you know in advance it's not going to be like Deus Ex and you still want to play it, meeting the game half way shouldn't be too hard. How this game is one of the biggest messes/tragedies in development history is well known, as is how most DX fans threw their toys from the pram and folded their arms on playing it. It's still no (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rigs:_Over_the_Road_Racing) Big Rigs. It's still got some fun aspects to the gameplay and an interesting central theme to check out, so play it I say. If you think you can't get past it not being Deus Ex, don't.

My only complaint is that you can treat everyone like crap and they still welcome you as their hero. I mean...I murdered most of the men of my allies in the game. Why is everybody nice to me? :wot:

Clearly, everyone who doesn't like IW is a pram-throwing child.

Oh no. If only. The sight of many hulk babies hurling their transport would surely have spurred Eidos to recall the game and fix it.

:joke: I would posit from the following evidence that it's actually the supporters:

I remember going to
the little medical area underneath the cathedral in Cairo. Watching all the people sad and desperate as everyone around them is dying. And the doctor, after I heard his plea, just stood there is despair as I threw dead bodies of his loved ones at him, only constantly repeat in the most depressing voice: "Please stop that..."...
fuck you IW haters :D

Also when
I entered the academy and saw the first little girl, my first reaction was very natural - I took out my pistol and shot her right in the forehead point-blank, as her dead body knocked backwards on her ass quite believably. Soon, the whole school went bats hit insane and came after me, as I killed other children. Even Fallout 3 wont let you do that!
I do think it's interesting that an act considered so repugnant that not being able to do it is built into the F3 game, is morally defended and indeed advocated for by at least one (admittedly nefarious) character in IW. I don't remember if it's actually an objective you can tick off, IIRC you cannot join the Paladins that early.

Definitely play IW. Yes, it's flawed in a lot of ways, but it's a ton of fun. It's less action-oriented than the original, and feels less linear. It has more of an open world, decision-oriented feel, even though the decisions largely don't make a difference. It has a very cool final stage with some rather awesome endings. The story is a bit strange, since they decided to consolidate a few of DX's endings into one and create a sequel based off of that, so the story ends up feeling like one possible thing that could have occurred after DX, rather than being THE sequel.
Even with all of the flaws, the game world is much richer than anything that's ever come out of Bethesda. I'd check it out for sure.
Definitely pass on Project Snowblind, though - the visuals and the augmentations are the only things it has in common with DX. Otherwise, it's just an ultra-linear action game with no replayability.

My interest in this game just doubled.
Sadly, the rest of the replies in this thread have been negative enough that doubling my interest still leaves me in the red.
So, T-S; have you decided to play IW or not? I say go for it. Though I enjoyed the first DX tremendously I loved IW even more (for all the positive reasons already stated itt). It's definitely worth playing, imho.
You'll pardon me if I run for the hills now to avoid the slings and arrows of the IW haters. :p

I suppose I should once I've finished my backlog of other titles. From what I've read, it sits in the same position as Thief 3 - not nearly as good as the originals, but still better than most.
I figure if I go in thinking its going to be crap, I'll end up being satisfied. I just wish I'd bought the damn game when it was on sale on Steam.

@T-Smith: Have you played The Nameless Mod yet? That is a fantastic single-player experience. I must have completed it 7 or 8 times so far, each time finding something new. The game really felt as though for every action I took, there was some reaction later.
Now that all the gamers are switching over to consoles though, the bleak future holds nothing but unmoddable corporate shovelware. I hope to see more projects like The Nameless Mod in the future from similar independent teams for other PC games, but this is increasingly less likely.

Definitely play I-War, but don't unless the events of DX1 are fresh in your mind.
