Applying this logic, one can argue that The Fourth of July and Bastille Day has brought death to many unaccounted good and innocent people, but you don't doubt these events meant a significat progress for the society. In fact, these events meant destruction of certain system, as opposed to celebrations of human labor - construction. I really don't how what is worse or better - a celebration of human labor, a symbol of construction, cooperation and progress in general, or remembernce day of some destructive events.
You've totally missed my point. All the days that I mentioned celebrate events, or outstanding people involved in important events. Holocaust Memorial Day doesn't celebrate something
good, it celebrates something
impactful - which is why it's a
special day and not an
every day.
Joe Shmoe being a blacksmith and Jane Shmane being a dental assistant isn't an event - it's an average, everyday activity that doesn't have any sort of global import.
And again, having one set of equipment or the other isn't cause for a holiday. If that's what the holiday is about, as Dia seems to think (in contrast to you) then it's a completely retarded waste of a day that could be used to celebrate something worthwhile.

This holiday remembers women's efforts for emancipation in the society. WHY NOT.
Because all women weren't involved in any sort of emancipation. Certain women, at certain times, worked for certain good things. If you want a holiday for that, again, great.

You know there is International Men's Day on November 19th, so it's a fair deal.
It makes it a very fair, very equal amount of stupid.

It's the secret code for shoot all puppies.
The happiness parade has been cancelled until we can think of valid reason to reload.

Next up: International Children's Day.
And what do I ask you have children done to deserve this? A lot of them are brats who can't even tie their own shoes let alone do anything noteworthy...
Now Macaulay Culkin Day - that would be different!

I move we disband all national holidays, but still keep the free time we get from them so we'll still have vacations.

I move everybody shut the fuck up and stop mauling this sweet intentioned thread.

Like ... AGWPT Day. Why not. His posts aren't necessary
good but they're
impactful. :D
I admit I forgot whose fault it was in the first place that we stopped making an important difference between a HOLIDAY (people not working) and COMMEMORATION DAY (people working). Commemoration days have this great advantage - any people who are ignorant about them can go about their business as usual. Live and let live - it's that simple.

Better hold them in respect... those brats can send you into retirement house one day as a revenge!

Actually, I'm with AGWPT on this one. I probably should of mentioned something sooner, but I wanted to be sure other people felt the same way.
As I get older, all holidays, including the "big ones" like birthdays and christmas, become equally pointless and I really wonder who came up with all this crap anyway. I do enjoy the time off though.
