(
http://www.incgamers.com/2013/08/eidos-montreals-new-thief-wont-even-let-you-jump-when-you-want-to) This just in: EM thinks we're all mentally handicapped.
I have defended T4 (marginally) and held out hope that we would get a smart, modern version ala DX:HR. No more. This is absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever heard come out of a developers mouth.
Quote:
In defense of this awful, awful decision, Eidos' lead level designer (in italics, because holy shit) William Schmidt explains that “Jumping, bouncing up and down, kind of broke the immersion ... We didn't want you to be the master thief and you just tend to fall off stuff all the time.”
Seriously? [insert nerd rage] SERIOUSLY? My IQ dropped 7 points just reading that. Why don't they just make it into a movie and let us watch the whole thing instead of interacting with it. Is everyone here capable of pushing the "play" button on your media device? APPARENTLY F*&%@#$ NOT.

The devs working on Thi4f are idiots, end of the story.

Idiots? IDIOTS? I've been pouring through my thesaurus looking for a strong enough word to describe what they are and it burst into flames in my hands. We would have to revert to some secret form of early latin complete with virgin sacrifices and self-mutilation to adequately convey the height of their idiocy. Profanity falls limp and useless in the presence of their idiocy.

Seriously, I believe it rather boils down to : >>We couldn't make jumping/mantling work in the engine. So, we decided to hide that with some scripting and console users would notice a difference anyway.<<
The kind of 'immersion' he is talking about translates for me to : Brain OFF, Console ON

What ? Bouncing up and down ? What game was that ? "Super Mario Brothers", maybe ?
At any rate: my immersion is broken already.... when I read that. :o

And with this recent news, my chances of even renting the Thief reboot have drastically decreased to the point, that I'd much prefer watching the entire game unfold on YouTube, instead of actually playing it. I've had to furiously put up with all the crap regarding something from the classic Thief game design being removed(such as Stephen Russell or the original factions amongst other things), but not even trusting players to know when and where they can jump within a level?
Just, what the hell Eidos Montreal?! Jumping around does NOT break immersion(the original Thief games allowed you to jump around wherever you wanted and immersion wasn't affected in the slightest), but treating gamers like imbeciles isn't helping your case EM in thinking that this game is an improvement over it's predecessors(in the same way Capcom thought DmC: Devil May Cry was an improvement over the original Devil May Cry games or Crystal Dynamics in regards to Tomb Raider's recent reboot, in comparison to the games by Core Design). If actual Thief fans aren't liking where this reboot is taking the series and Dishonoured fans probably won't like it either(which BTW had the ability to actually jump in that game and it was made on the same exact engine(Unreal Engine 3) as the Thief reboot!!)
If you're not even going to respect player's intelligence Eidos Montreal, than why should I care about your pathetic excuse for a game? :nono:

Well, that's the point of no return for me. These people are just stupid.

Then again, the old school mode may not have this restriction.

Wow, I was actually pretty hyped up about Thief 4 despite its' reputation here. Now... well seriously Eidos Montreal, I've got no money for you, but instead I've got two words:
Fu*k you :cheeky:
