Back in school, a friend of mine who was working on the school magazine used to pretend to be Dr. Apple, an incompetent PC doctor. Put a floppy disc into a cd drive, which would then no longer open.
Another time he turned on a computer and the moniter just started spewing out smoke.

I don't know about trayless drives or embedding CDs in the wall, but I have seen a few
tray CD drives that will eject the CD without spinning it down.
I've seen this as well. I heard my CD drive spinning the CD at extreme speeds, and after hearing about exploding CDs, I quickly tod the PC to reset (as the drive wouldn't open). It continued the insane spining of the CD throughout the reboot, so trying the eject button again (I wanted to allow the drive a chance to spin down, which wouldn't happen if i just turned it off), the tray opened staight away, and the CD literally flew straight up by about 5 cm (about 2 inches), before landing on the tray again and scratching the disk.
From that day forth, whenever I've heard my CD drive acting strangely (and not righting itself quickly), I turn off the PC, less potential for damage that way.

I'm curious, how does something like that happen? What caused a disc to suddenly start spinning insanely fast? :o
