I've always wondered why my cd drive grinds... - by charlestheoaf

My cd-drive always makes a grinding noise when loading up System Shock 2 (during the splash screen while checking the disk). It has done this the entire time I've owned the game, across three different computers.
Anyone know?

Might be the cd check or a scratched part on the disc.
But I think I remember having that too, so it's probably the first.

Some "copy protections" use intentionally pressed-in bad sectors. The drive is then asked to go to this sector. And only when "bad sector" comes back, the CD is recognised as "original". If this is the case, your drive might try repeatedly to read this bad sector... making despairing sounds...

I thought this thread was gonna be about how you found something in your cd rom drive.. :D
I found a piece of warcraft II disc in one of my cdrom drives, never messed with any of the discs though.

It has happened to me 2 or 3 times that I wondered why a CD wouldn't play until I realized I put it on top of another that was already in the drive.
What's your crazy CD drive story?

My cd drive blew rasberries at me a few times.
Turns out it was some sort of joke virus that you email to friends.

I once karate-chopped an open cd-drive at school.
It didn't work too well after that.

I completly ruined my original copy of Diablo with my old lap top.. It was kinda like a girlled cheese sandwich. (Turns out that the Toshiba Satelite Pro has a few heating issues when you use a Keyboard/mouse/usb dock with it.)
Oh, and the fun I had dislodging a double stacked pair of games from my PS2. :p
