$1000 USD for 10 days in Iceland, WITH a rental? Is this the whole package? Flights, accomodation, car?
Dude. How cheap does it have to be for it not to be 'rape'?
Anyway, try Finland during summer. Although I bet Iceland would be all kinds of cool.
~$900 for the flight, $1000 for the rental car, plus cash for hostel accommodations and what have you.
Seriously, how fantastic would this be? You drive right into the big blank spot on this map and pitch your tent:

Pitch a tent and try to eat some Hákarl.

I went to Austria last year and it just blew me away. It was like a more laid back and prettier version of Germany. But seriously you can't go wrong with Switzerland, possibly the coolest country in the world.

some sparsely populated, naturally beautiful country like Australia or Iceland for camping and tooling around in the countryside.
You
really need to visit the Jukkasjärvi (
http://www.icehotel.se/) Ice Hotel. Seriously. Sparsely populated. Ice. Snow. Vast, cold plains of nothing but the occasional squaking bird. And the far-off sounds of someone elses snowmobile. A small mining town way off in the distance. And a busload of Japanese tourists.
But not now. The weather is getting fickle. Curse that global warming. It's only -10C there now. You want to be there next January or February, when it's -20 to -30C. Don't worry about warm clothes, they'll fit you out.
Bring money.
(No, they don't pay me, I used to live there. I can post pics from a couple of weeks ago upon request.)

I just bought a ticket to Iceland. Alcohol may or may not have been a factor in this purchase. For sure it was a stunning deal: ~$750, and hostels look cheap! Good thing the krona is falling in tandem with the greenback!
Anyone have suggestions as to where to visit? I'd like to get out of Reykjavik. I haven't booked hostel accommodations yet.

Upon rereading this thread, I rather like this Bathcat chap.
