I confess, I often like to listen to what is probably going to be viewed as a dire selection of pop, old songs and nonsense when I'm driving. Songs that make me grin like an idiot or have sing along factor++ have a calming influence on my temper and I'll be the first to admit the air is blue most times I get behind the wheel of car.
OK HERE ARE THE RULES
Metal is out, it makes me angry and drive like a nutter. Ambient music is out, there's nothing ambient or remotely glacial about being in my car. Classical music is out, it's either too nondescript over the noise of the supercharger on full song engine, or too violent - it's easy to forget I'm not waging war on the French with an orchestra in full song belting out of the speakers. Again, I end up driving like a nutter. Meatloaf is out just BECAUSE.
Preferably, catchy singing will be involved so I can sing along badly with the wrong words. Here's what I got, in no particular order. You'll get the idea.
House O'Pain - Jump Around
Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get Retarded
Kenny Loggins - Highway to the Danger Zone (zomg Top Gun)
Kool and the Gang - Jungle Boogie
Bee Gess - Stayin Alive
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head
Wannadies - You and Me Song
Beach Boys - I get Around
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
America - A Horse with No Name (GTA:SA FTW)
Andy Williams - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Paul Simon - Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes
The Mamas And the Papas - California Dreamin'
War - Low Rider
The Who - Eminence Front (GTA:SA FTW x2)
Britney Spears - Toxic
Gang of Four - Damaged Goods
Suggestions for more driving pap in a similar vein please, this is not a HO IS THE COOLEST competition so spare me the usual suspects k thx
gogogogo :D

If you want some genuinely fun music, play some Tower of Power. You just can't not love 70's funk with lots of brass and silly lyrics. Classics: "What is Hip?", "Soul Vaccination", "Soul with a Capital 'S'", "Knock Yourself Out". Basically anything that they do that is fast (I'm no sure how well their ballads would do for your silly-music-to-listen-to-over-the-sound-of-the-engine requirement) would fit quite well.

My personal favorite driving song is Two Hundred and Twelve Thousand, Three Hundred and Fourty-Eight Bottles of Beer on the Wall. I have excellent taste in music.

Just a few minutes ago I was blaring and singing along to "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth. As I was dropping off Paradise Lost and Goethe's Faust at the library. At the time it struck me as a bit odd (extremely repetitive thuggery with a cow bell contrasted with purportedly greatest poetic works in English and German), but just now I thought to myself that the real star of both is Satan, who is a sonnuvabitch if there ever was one.

That's precisely WHY metal songs make some of the best driving songs. I hereby vote to disregard this rule.
My driving mix is designed expressly for cranking at top volume while driving at 90+mph with the sunroof open yelling at fuckers to get the hell out of my way.
Ministry - So What (Live)
Praga Khan - My Mind is My Enemy
KMFDM - Megalomaniac
NIN - Last
Superchunk - Slack Motherfucker
Chemical Bros. - Block Rockin' Beats
Da Lench Mob - Guerrillas in Da Mist
Operation Ivy - Unity
But, ironically, if I were to only pick one album, it would be the Violent Femmes debut.

Primal Scream - Accelerator
It's about an ACCELERATOR! CARS! ACCELER-...THERES AN ACCE... IN THE CAR... oh boy when you get it you'll thank me.
But if you don't like things that might make you cause accidents (nearly happened to my brother driving whilst listening to 'Making Orange Things' by VSnares) you might not want it.
