My first (and yeah, only) actual exposure to the song was Sting's re-working of it for the movie. It was played on TV for a long time all the goddamn time, so it was kinda hard to miss.
I know this may be heresy, but I never liked The Police all that much, so I didn't listen to them much.
Same here until a few years ago. I think they're definitely an acquired taste, particularly some of the deep album cuts and early material. IMO Sting has turned into one hell of a songwriter over the years though, love him or hate him.

I'm guilty of ocassionally being amused by:
(

The Escape Club : Wild Wild West (it's in there somewhere)
(also, all you ladies who like garbage like 'Blister in the sun' or 'Hungry Eyes' or whatever should put them in here even though you've probably never hidden the fact from anyone)

For the record, the best Police album is Zenyatta Mondatta, because it's all rhythm section. Their best song is (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfztiGanKS8&feature=related) this. And Synchronicity is shit.
Now, back to the topic...
That's an underrated song from an underrated band, probably one of my favorites of the 80s and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I even like the cover by Sixpence None the Richer (another underrated band). I also have a strange fondness for those tunes by General Public and Waitresses you mentioned. But Squeeze? Can't get behind that.

It took that long for Madonna to crop up in here, huh? Personally, I liked Papa Don't Preach much more than Borderline when I was a kid.
I couldn't stand Madonna back then. Fucking roller skating music. However, I eventually got married and my wife kinda aurally beat me into submission with Madonna music. Then I got a decent stereo and some of her early stuff actually started sounding kinda good. :erm: The only consolation for my ego is that the Madonna songs I like the best are ones she didn't write.
And speaking of roller skating music, how about (
http://www.mtv.com/videos/chaka-khan/33437/i-feel-for-you.jhtml) Chaka Khan - I Feel for You. I had long since forgotten about this one, but over the holidays I was at a local park (Boston Common) and they were playing it over the PA for the people ice skating on the pond. Can't say I like it all that much, but I did feel a little nostalgic. I believe it was a Prince song too.
And speaking of Prince songs, here's probably my favorite of his: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAZgLcK5LzI) Bangles - Manic Monday
Nice choice. Can't believe that didn't come out on page 1. I'm not sure whether that's my favorite video or Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer or Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity. But that's a topic for another thread. That wasn't the first video to use rotoscoping though. I think it was this gem: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5ZEzWwKJnY&feature=fvw) Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
It's hard to be ashamed about the Talking Heads. They've aged far better than most '80s bands, if you ask me. Also, the Heads' bassist and drummer were responsible for (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6OGy57tmEY) Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
That one piqued my interest because there was a wierd rap/dance song on the album and it was the first time I heard white people rapping. It was also recorded at Compass Point studios in the Bahamas, which was right up there with The Power Station in NY for producing hits back in the 80s.
I think my list could go on for a while, because back in the 80s I was busy listening to Zeppelin and prog and mostly sneered at new wave and dance music. Now I appreciate it a lot more. To keep it short, here's a few other classics that I know came from Compass Point and fit the criteria for this topic:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zJdbpzfJMs) Roxy Music - Avalon
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRd4hWfmmNw) Robert Palmer - I didn't mean to turn you on (most of his hits were recorded there, this is probably my favorite).
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDZy6-fMCw4&feature=related) B52s - Rock Lobster (oh, I'm going to get shit for this one)
(
http://vodpod.com/watch/1036731-the-cure-just-like-heaven) The Cure - Just like Heaven
The Grace Jones version of Demolition Man mentioned above was done there too. And here's a more obscure one I heard again recently: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Io0nG1Cq4&feature=related) Ian Dury - Spasticus Autisticus (this was an underground dance hit that was a bit before my time, but I vaguely remembered the (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasticus_Autisticus) controversy).

(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atiyl3ECACk) This and the whole Look Sharp album. Sometimes I'm amazed how seamlessly they used plastic pop-ish elements with typical rock vibes or even references to blues. If only today's popstars had such ideas... :laff:
And I love Synchronicity, it's the only Police album I can listen to without throwing out half of the songs :P

Ah, I used to play Monopoly in Soviet Union with friends while listening that thing.
*The Monopoly was brought from India, of course they didn't sell original Monopoly in SU :)

Honeymoon Suite - it doesn't matter what song, or which album, they're all equally "bad" and fucking great.
Also,
"Lunatic Fringe" - Red Ryder
"Summertime Girls" - Y&T
"Screaming in the Night" - Krokus
"Turn Around" - Bonnie Tyler
"Land Down Under" - Men at Work
"West-End Girls" - Pet Shop Boys
and finally...
"Love is Love" - Culture Club (from the Elecrtic Dreams soundtrack). Shit....

I'm discovering this too the more I listen to them. I was only familiar with New Girl Now because my band covered it, but there's something miserably catchy about almost everything they did. The videos are especially masterpieces of 80's cheese.

I can honestly say, with a straight face, I have their first four albums--and forced my daughter to listen to them, recently.
...them and Slade (Run, Run Away Bitch!)

Speaking of Ian Dury, this amusing (but NSFW) AMV features a 1981 song poking fun at him and other UK artists of the day:
