Ladies and gentlemen, this thread is about as close to any discussion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Extreme is ever going to get.
Ironically enough, I actually saw Extreme live opening for, of all people, David Lee Roth (and Cinderella), on the second day of a three day concert binge with my buddy (
http://www.robertperkinsmusic.com/live/) Rob, which included those three, the Neville Brothers, Anthrax, David Sanborn, Slayer, Spyrogyra, Megadeth, Terence Blanchard, Alice in Chains, Lionel Hampton and a few more*. This was in '91, just as More Than Words was becoming popular, and DLR was in his last gasp as an arena act - touring without Vai or Eddie for the first time.
They uhhh, well, they weren't the worst band I saw that weekend. And Nuno's obligatory-hair-metal-masturbatory guitar solo was probably the best one of the evening. But they were, over all, utterly forgettable.
Their horridness was compounded by my freshman year roommate - an unstable, right wing, crewcutted muscle head who eventually joined the Army after studying Arabic for three years. We, surprisingly enough, got along great most of the time (especially when he moved out), except for the fact that he only owned three CDs and he listened to that damn Pornograffitti album EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN DAY on repeat for three hours at a time.
*I'll let you guess who opened for whom those days.

Shhh!!! If I don't leech off someone else's post I'll have nothing remotely intelligent to say.

True. My only affection for them comes from the fact that upon the wasted landscape of utterly forgettable 80's metal bands, Extreme actually had something to say beyond, "let's get drunk and fuck!." Nuno also had a nose ring, which was utterly cool at the time. My wife used to listen to Pornograffitti at about the same rate as your roommate. It was fine for the first week or so, then the beatings started...

Reckoning
Around the Sun
Wow! I thought I was the only one who put Reckoning right above Around the Sun on the bottom of things. After seeing AMG's drooling review of it I thought maybe everyone but me loved it. I've got nothing against it, it just don't connect to it in any way (oh great, now I'm a 14 year old girl).
And you like Up and Monster too! Yay for comfort in numbers.

The second half of your sentence is more or less accurate, the first half less so. There is more to music than whether or not
you like it.I phrased myself poorly. I didn't mean to say that music was a random collection of noise - obviously, there's a lot to music. But where I've seen people semi-rationally defend why they like/dislike books, movies, and games (especially games), I've never seen such a thing in regards to music. Yeah, it's art, yeah, you can have a discussion about it - but while aspects of the way the music is made, how it's put together, etc. is objective - whether or not you "like" it or enjoy listening to it is (as far as I can tell) entirely subjective.

Note: I never actually mentioned being an Extreme fan per se. ex:"More Than Words" sounds great, but has to have some of the most incoherent (
http://www.romantic-lyrics.com/lm6.shtml) lyrics I've ever heard.
Quote Posted by Dia
The lyrics as mean 'don't just tell me you love me; show me'.
It says, "Shut up and put out", but in the nicest possible way.
It turns out chicks are suckers for that.

Ah, I used the wrong term when calling the lyrics "incoherent".
I understand the meaning behind the song; what I should have said is that the language/English of the lyrics is disjointed and plain bad. At least that's the way it always sounded to me.
"Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
Its not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldnt have to say that you love me
Cos Id already know"
Song lyrics don't often read well as poetry, but this song in particular always bugged me. Maybe because it comes across as trying to
sound very sophisticated, but manages to sound like someone tried to fit the lyrics into the melody with a bent shoehorn and a trowel.
I still love how the music and harmonies sound, as long as I don't think too hard on the lyrics when I hear it.

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen it written out like that. That's horrific.

But it does show how strong the music and sound of the recording is. :)
Misuse of the language in lyrics (unless intentional) does bother the shit outta me.
(Yeah. Like many people here, I get pretty nitpicky... one of the reasons I don't strike back if someone feels that I may have misused the ellipsis in a post...) ...:D
Paul McCartney:
"But if this ever changing world
in which we live

Say live and let die"

This seems the appropriate time to post this gem from Lenny Kravitz. Talk about lyrical prowess. I sang for a cover band when this song came out and there were many many nights I pleaded with God to be impaled upon a microphone stand.
I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly
I'd fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please
Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah
Oh I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah
Let's go and see the stars
The milky way or even Mars
Where it could just be ours
Let's fade into the sun
Let your spirit fly
Where we are one
Just for a little fun
Oh oh oh yeah !
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah yeah yeah
I got to get away
Feel I got to get away
Oh oh oh yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
Oh Yeah !
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away
I want to get away [x4]
Yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you yeah yeah
I got to get away
I want to get away [x4]
Yeah
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah with you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Um. Yeah. Lenny Kravitz can suck my dick. Fucktard.
