Its my birthday on wednesday and im thinking of getting morrowind, im just curious as to how thieving works(being a consumate taffer) is there any way to steal stuff and not have it result in the stolen items being recognized by the shopkeeper.

It sounds like a big deal, but it's not really. There are plenty of traders so you can easily steal from one and sell the loot on to someone else. If you do get rumbled, run away and (as long as you're a Thieves Guild member) one of the Guild will sort out the bounty on your head... for a price.
This game is seriously worth getting. Don't pass it by on the basis of this one slightly irritating flaw.

Be careful when stealing from a shopkeeper.
Stealing an item results in you not being able to sell that item back to the shopkeeper, whether you stole the item or not.
For example, steal a pair of common pants, sell it elsewhere, then legally acquire a pair of common pants off a dead bandit. Attempt to sell it where you stole the previous pair and the merchant will recognize it as "theirs".
So don't steal crap items you will likely want to sell back to the merchant if found elsewhere. It's a pain in the ass to have to remember where you can't sell a "steel shortsword" or some other common item.
EDIT: Bah. I read Kagouti's thread after posting. Serves me right. Ignore me.
