huh, weird I don't have to log in.
It's an article detailing a service called "Shotspotter" that installs gunshot sensors in your city and then can call local police departments when gunshots are detected. It gives an example of one instance where a scene of a gunshot in Milwaukee was 17 feet away from where the Shotspotter placed it (the office/hub of Shotspotter is in california).
It also touches upon some of the concerns over privacy vs. security and the cost-effectiveness of the service as well as some departments being undermanned to be able to adequately respond to all the alerts.

I managed to read it fine. Pretty crazy stuff. Am I the only person who doesn't balk at the idea the police could listen in to conversations I have on the street? Probably just my overdeveloped sense of respect for authority though, and I can understand why it's not a great idea long-term.
Also, it surprised me that they were so surprised at the low rate of call-ins of gunshots.

Now if only they can find a way to use that to fund an inexplicable giant hole in the sea, we'd be set!
Seriously, did they ever explain why "a hole in the sea" was needed?
