Any updates, faetal? I'm looking forward to running you over after shooting you with a RPGdoing some coop with you in Los Santos...

None yet - been a hectic few weeks. Was back in the UK for my graduation last week and am moving house this week or next.
I'll order that celeron and get something sorted after the move. I'm very up for some GTAV, especially as I now own it.

*Record player scratching to a stop*
Just fired off a support request to Gigabyte before ordering the Celeron and got this (google translated) response:
"Hello Following the no.sn, your card must build a bios update support your cpu. Please return sav. we reflashons bios: Exceptionally, and because of the difficulties you encounter, I invite you to return the card in our local French for testing for a possible exchange. Thank you to attach a copy of the symptoms experienced (print our exchange via your browser) and a photocopy of your proof of purchase and your contacts properly coordinated. Shipping fees are however your responsibility."
So it looks like I may have a solution which may not necessitate a new CPU.

I think they are trying to tell you that the new cpu won't run with the mobo unless the BIOS is updated?
faetal on 27/7/2015 at 13:44
Yes, but more importantly that I can send it to them for testing and replacement.

UPDATE: Gigabyte have updated the BIOS on my motherboard - I'll aim to test this tonight. Fingers crossed, I could be up and running soon.

Updated board works a treat. Everything up and running nicely.
Thanks for all of the support folks, and big thanks as always to Bikerdude for suggesting the build :)

Your welcome.

I find it a bit surprising that the board would not boot at all without the BIOS update - usually, it will start up, complain a lot, show an unknown cpu, but work enough to allow a BIOS update, but not this time, I guess.
well, end's well all's well, I suppose.

The same thing faetal experienced happened to me too some years ago. Fortunately, a local shop was able to upgrade the BIOS for a token fee and my build was only delayed a day.
Fairly early in the boot process, the BIOS needs to look up some CPU-specific parameters by CPU identifier, e.g. clock settings. If the CPU is not recognized, it seems that some or most BIOS just bail out rather than trying to use some set of fallback parameters and carry on with unpredictable results.
