what does that even MEAN
It means you're not sending a message if you just go ahead and buy it by way of download, regardless of how you feel about it.
In the case of Thief, a physical copy can be obtained if you buy it overseas through Amazon. If I were buying this game, which I'm not, then I would order it from afar and get myself the physical copy I personally prefer. Mind you, I would be waiting for this game to be heavily discounted before I even did that. In any case, they know doubt track how many digital copies vs. physical copies are sold, so if they see enough overseas sales for physical copies then next time they may do a small run of physical copies just to cover the bases.

Yeah, but you're not sending a message if you don't buy it either. EM and every other company don't care, because a few lost sales on ideological grounds aren't going to hurt them in the slightest.

And since it's not really going to affect things one way or the other, I think it would be a shame to deprive yourself of something you might actually like and enjoy (not necessarily talking about Thief now) just to make a statement no one important is going to hear.

If it weren't for Steam, PC gaming as a platform would be dead.
This is, unfortunately, true.
For many years, i avoided Steam like the plague. If I saw the words "Valve" or "Steam" as a requirement then I just passed. But, just try to find almost ANY new pc game out there that doesn't require Steam. After realizing how many good games I was passing up I finally gave in and joined Steam. And everything has been GREAT!
I just go online to download the game and Steam patches it. No DVDs to insert. Then I go in OFFLINE mode and disconnect my internet. Offline mode works great!
You will have to give in to Steam or miss out on just about every single pc game that comes out.

I would surrender to steam if it worked like GOG. You pay, you download the game, the game is yours. No need for having further connection with them.

I would rather deprive myself of one silly game that I 'might' actually end up enjoying and keep the fifty bucks to spend on something important like food for my kids or supplies for the house. I will only spend money on something I feel is absolutely worth it and if it doesn't meet my requirements for a worthwhile purchase, it's not going to be purchased. I don't have a disposable income to work with. The purchase has to be worth it to me, or it ain't gonna happen.

You're talking about the quality of the product - these guys are talking about a method of delivery. They're saying it would be a waste to miss out on a high quality game (if it is in fact high quality) just because you don't like the idea of a digital product vs. a physical one. But in the end, the game itself isn't going to be any different.

Regardless of the quality, I would still rather 'deprive' myself the indulgence of a game if the company can't be bothered creating a physical copy. Physical copies are special. The are something you can go back and touch years later, they evoke an experience. I can forgive an Indie studio with no cash doing digital only, but not a AAA release like this.

So, no thoughts/takers on my idea from the previous page for those of you who refuse to buy a digital copy of Thiaf?
Heck, you could probably make a better cover than EM.:sly:

That's stupid, and you're being irrational. I have physical copies of several PC games dating back to as recent as last Christmas and I don't feel any more special towards them now than I did when I bought them. The exceptions are my collector's editions.
Physical media is dead, and I say good riddance.
