those things help sell this game to a wider audience, which is a good thing IMO
Well, now you've stepped in it. Don't you know accessibility and more Thief fans are a bad thing? They might get being a Thief fan
wrong!

as a hater of the Deadly Shadows, this Thief (4), with its dark and shady flavors, is looking very pleasant to my eye at the moment

Saw that one and one hinting the exact opposite.

It was Adam Smith @ (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/04/first-look-thief/) (didn't play it though) who
hinted that it might resemble more the first two games:
Quote:
...while Eidos Montreal are rebooting and revamping the series, it’s the second game’s setting that new Thief most resembled during this first look.
Adam Smith in the comments section:

No love for Deadly Shadows, Adam?
04/04/2013 at 14:21 Adam Smith says:
Yeah – much more than a lot of Thief fans I know. Realised I hadn’t mentioned it at all as I finished, but I do think the distinction between the first two and the third is worthwhile, and new Thief, in spatial design at least, seems more Metal Age than anything.
And he liked what he saw (again, didn't play it though):
Quote:
They know that I’ve missed firing water arrows at torches and clubbing guards on the noggin. I’ve missed creeping on carpets and shuddering at the sight of a hard, stone floor. I’ve missed being encouraged to think about a location as a challenge and a possibility, and I reckon Thief just might bring all of those things back to me.

My feeling is that it's not really worth being disappointed by the changes in Thief 4 too much, because the ship sailed a long time ago. We weren't going to get something as good or as elegantly minimalist as the LGS games, because they're gone. And more importantly, most of the stuff that rubs us the wrong way was in Thief 3 anyway.
Thief 3 ideally should have inoculated us against disappointment by Thief 4. Best to do what we did with Thief 3, and just get what enjoyment out of it we can.
And frankly, I've never felt as fondly about Thief 2 as TDP either. For me, everything has been downhill from the first game. It was a singular achievement IMO.

As impractical as it is (this post is mainly aimed at Slyfoxx, but applies to anyone), if the whole physical media thing is such a big deal, I've got an idea for ya (keep in mind, I too am disappointed that there's no physical copy of the game, but not enough to avoid buying the product*):
You could get the Steam/digital download version of the game and put its installer (or in the case of Steam, do a "backup" of the game to disc which I did for Left 4 Dead 2 for example) on a DVD. Then, you could buy a DVD case, stick the DVD in there and then make a label for the disc/case. Viola, physical version of your game. (Yes, I'm aware of the "requires Steam" issue, but hey, I never said this was a perfect solution did I?) Or actually, I'll do you one better come to think of it: Just copy the data to a thumb drive.
*Main reason I'd want a physical copy is because of the artwork and owning a physical thing to remember the game by. You know, as a sort of collector's item or whatever. Hey, after all, I kept the trapezoidal box for Thief 2 because it is phenomenal and because it is for a series that I am passionate about. The second reason falls in line with other people who want physical copies: Because I like having physical media that I can refer back to if needed instead of having to download the data. Installing from a disc is faster than downloading a product from the net I think.

Can they really get mad at people for stealing a game about stealing? :P
This was a reason LGS went under. T2 was pirated to death, and money was never recouped in sales.
So I guess people should be mad about stealing a game about stealing.

It was a joke, no need to take it so seriously. Of course people should buy it, only those who cannot actually tell the difference between fiction and reality would use that as justification.
