Who the hell hugs their property?
What? You never hug your Thief CDs? You monster :(

Why the hell would I do that? I'd crush them!
Now, stick them in my pants and go 'mmm' -- I'd do that.

Yeah, but the edge of those hubs do chafe something fierce.

Only my beloved Mafia CD (Game Disc #1) ever gets that sort of special treatment... I must confess that there was an unfortunate little mix up once when I had this one-night thing with the Installer Disc #2, but in my defence it was very dark and I only found out the horrible truth the next morning! :o Ever since that night I've dreamt of a Mafia threesome though...
Um... anyway... I know where the physical media people in this thread are coming from, and I can kind of sympathise with them. I don't care about it in games to be honest, all the old game boxes took craploads of space, and I was glad when the slimmer CD/DVD cases became the standard. The smaller cases look much nicer on your shelf, but looking nice is just about the only function of game cases these days. Most games don't even come with manuals anymore, if you're lucky there may be a one-page quickstart guide with the epilepsy warning and advertisements for other games. Even the game that <s>comes on the disc</s> may come on the disc (my copy of Guild Wars 2 came with the ugliest DVD case in the history of gaming, and had nothing but a download code on the inside. :erg: The game itself is pretty bad too.) needs to be patched anyway, so there's not much point buying games in some physical format anymore.
But when we're talking about music, I still want to have my music on CD... As a bit of a music collector, I think it's nice to collect all the albums by my favourite artists, and I sometimes like to buy vinyls too because they look totally awesome (not because they "sound much better than CDs" - they don't). All this makes me feel like a bit of a dinosaur sometimes, because I know that digital media is the way to go, both in music and games, but I suppose I'll get over it. :p I'm not really against digital media at all though - I stream a lot of music and I do buy music in digital format when there are no physical formats available. I do think that it's kind of "unfair" that digital files cost as much as CDs though... sometimes they're even more expensive!

When Valve has gone bust and Steam been turned off, X years from now, not only will you lose all the games you hadn't already downloaded and backed up to some other media, you won't be able to install the ones you have backed up since there will be no Steam to satisfy their DRM requirements, on install.
Well, hopefully someone would find a way to crack the Steam DRM in this scenario and we can unlock and play our backed up games again, even if not strictly legally.
But still, the point I am making is that entrusting your games to a download service is also not without future risks.
No storage media will last forever. In fact, with a physical cd or dvd, all it takes is one unfortunate accident and your copy is lost, and if you're unlucky, that could happen the day after you bought the game. The risks are probably even bigger in households with small children or pet animals.
Several people have said they prefer physical copies because they like to have something to put on their shelf, but for me, that's a
downside. I already have dozens of music and computer cd cases sitting around in big stacks, because I've run out of shelf space and have nowhere to put them. Fewer physical copies of games means less stuff to clutter up a small apartment.
Edit: Oh, and I'm exactly like Tomi when it comes to music - digital format just doesn't have the same feel as physical records, with the artwork, booklet and stuff, so I still stick to cd's and vinyls. Which is precisely why I ran out of shelf space years ago. ;)

I don't understand why people are so harsh towards others that wish to have physical cd/dvd. I for one would like to have a physical copy. I pay $69.00 for the game thus I should get the physical box. Why is it that other countries have thief 4 for sale (physical copy) and yet North America would not, only digital. Is the company trying to say that other countries are honest and wont copy the game, And North America are thieves and copies the game? Let's think about this. The reason I said this, it's because most or dare say all stores do not sell used pc games due to piracy. They told me this in person.
Also, how come the Xbox 360, PS4, etc.. they get cd/dvds and PC's dont.
I have splinter cell conviction, and they provided the cd's and I get to play on steam. I have no problem with this. If I had to format the harddrive, I can install the game easily.
Also, how about others who do not have internet connection, a person can still play the game without going on internet if they have the cd/dvd copy of the game.
I read the whole thread and I notice that dethtroll when he does not like some ones replies or opinions, he critizies them harshly. You could debate with someone but to bash them because they don't agree with you it's pretty childish.
This is my opinion.

Unlikely, considering the boxed versions sold are nothing but glorified coasters in a DVD box (as New Horizon more eloquently put it: "it's just a steam key on the CD"). I remember back in the days of the old Eidos forums even mods referring to those as (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?p=947678) "the Steam trap".

Having Steam games on DVD would be nice if they installed faster than they do if I simply download them on my crappy DSL line. Seriously, I dunno what the deal is, but it seems like Steamworks games take *forever* to install from the disks, and that's not including the usual multi-GB downloads they have to do afterwards for patches and DLC and whatnot.

It's your opinion, yes, but it's not a new one and this has been debated to death over and over for a decade. You're late to the party, so you have three choices: suck it up, switch to console, or take up knitting.
It's not that I necessarily disagree with your position but this is the paradigm we have to live with these days. If you really want to bitch about Steam -- ironically enough considering you got mad at me for pre-empting you yesterday -- then do it in the (

you kidding me, you think it's about "you got mad at me for pre-empting you yesterday" little man you got it all wrong. We were discussing the pros and cons of DVD/copy versus steam (imaginary games) We all have opinions and yours is just that an opinion. Dethtroll it must be hard for you to control your pride. Regarding of my three choices, can I take all three? :joke:
Again, we all have different opinions, suck it up.:thumb:
thank you
