Ah, so now we're getting somewhere. You think digital downloads aren't worth as much as a physical copy. Fair enough, actually. But still, as the others have said it's ridiculous [to avoid digital copies when no physical is available.] And I really don't understand how "putting family first" equates not buying a digital copy, whereas you could easily have said "put family first" equating physical media too! In other words, what does it matter if it's physical or digital, the game data itself is the same.

... Tapes have been making a comeback recently with bands using them as a cheap and fun way to hand out music at events ...
That's just something to make the hipsters all gooey.

...and Vinyl sales are once again on the rise too.
Because of this sudden perception that vinyl sounds better.
A vinyl record
is different than a CD in that it's something physical with small variations/damage that can (and does) occur, giving it that "warmth" everyone talks about that a digital interpretation simply cannot reproduce or interpret. With play, age, or differences in playback equipment, each can be somewhat unique. Unlike a CD/DVD, they are not just a mess of identical digital code pressed onto a wafer. They can have a "life" of their own, so to speak--but it doesn't mean they are better because of this.
But the key is, a CD or DVD is nothing more than a pressing of identical digital code. So, in my mind, there is no difference between a CD/DVD and a digital download. They are exactly the same. All you truly own (or rent or lease or whatever the hell the EULA says) is the "code". The CD or DVD is just one of the three delivery methods to provide you with the code you seek.
As for should a digital download be cheaper? No. Spread out over units, the cost of a DVD or CD found in the box is almost nil. It's not like a book, where the download should be cheaper because you're not using 300 sheets of paper and ink.
(In all truth, I personally would prefer to have a physical disc just because I like having an archival copy of things, and I hate the notion of having to download instead of just buying the game from the store and popping it in the tray.)

Yes, it's a common misconception that just because something is digital it should be cheaper. Servers and bandwidth cost money too. Many books I buy for my Kindle are more expensive than their physical counterparts. Part of the reason is supply and demand - people want the convenience of electronic books, and will pay to get it.

OK, but you can see where things are heading. Will you just never buy a PC game ever again? Because within a year or two, there probably won't be any physical copies of PC games anymore. Don't get me wrong, I like having a physical copy too. But if I can't get one, then I'm just going to move on to the next best thing.
Can you imagine still using this...
Inline Image:

We'd certainly never have games like Thief because it would take up a library of cassette tapes, and one would always be corrupt.

Ok honestly this part is just stupid. You're acting like it's a good thing that you can't actually own a hard copy anymore.
Aside from the fact that with it gone it only burns bridges for the consumer and benefits absolutely no one besides the distributor, you also forget to ask things like "What happens when the companies I bought my DL from go under?" Here's what happens: All those games you bought are gone, at least with steam you can download a offline copy if valve goes under it says that in the paperwork. How about games that never get a physical copy and are purely online from only one online distributor? This sounds weird now but it's probably more likely in the future, then those games are gone for good and anyone who would want to go back and play them is sol.
There are so many things wrong with this statement the biggest being is theres absolutely no upside.
First off, very little that's on the internet is gone forever, certainly not millions of dollars worth of video games. If Steam or some other service went down and everyone lost their games you bet your ass there'd be an outcry. At the worst, what we're seeing right now with GFWL -- which was much-reviled -- being put to sleep is that a few --
a few -- games will no longer work properly. Big whoop, they sucked anyway.

It's neither stupid, nor am I irrational. I put my family first and anything else can come later. How I personally choose to invest my hard earned money is up to me. Put simply, I don't give a damn. So if there is no physical copy for me, I won't bother with it and I won't miss it. Personally, I feel there is room for both physical and digital media. I don't think one should rule out the other.
Oh, did ya hear, Vinyl is dead too.
This is still stupid and you're still being irrational, and you're dodging the issue. "OMG FAMILY FIRST" -- yeah, and?
What does that have to do with the topic at hand? Nobody is disputing that you have the right to spend your money the way you want. But you are literally saying that if it's not in a box, you don't want it, even though
it's the same damn game. Why does it even matter? There's nothing
special to a box. It's a thin case with a DVD inside -- if it even
has one, it might just be a Steam key. You're telling me you actually value that?
Why?

It should be amazing to me but it's not that some of you just can't comprehend having an opinion that differs from yours.

Go punch yourself in the face. I'm so sick of the LOL U KANT HANDEL SUM1 ELS'S OPINYUN argument. I accept that NV's opinion differs. That does not preclude me saying his opinion is stupid.

Maybe you're so sick of it for a reason.....think hard....what might that be? Hummmm.
