Please someone think of the Children...
No, REALLY think of the Children
No matter how well-intentioned "Statutory" laws may be, they still seem like "you are inferior and stupid and cannot think for yourself, we will decide what is right for you"
I do not think ageism is taken seriously enough because by the time people get old enough to do anything about it they do not care. WELL DUH. This applies to the whole gamut of controversial issues from sex (which regrettably does not affect me) to video game sales (which does)
No doubt I will grow out of thinking this way :erg:
Although you may be able to think for yourself, I would argue that most of the people under age for various things down here in Aus seriously aren't mature enough to make decisions about those things.

Old people have plenty of ageism of their own to deal with. The world is crap unless you're middle-aged, middle-class, heterosexual, white and male.
I think the age of consent is necessary, however unreasonable it might seem while your young. It's nothing to do with being 'inferior' or 'stupid' it's about protecting young people from predatory adults, and protecting young people from themselves- as discussed people mature at different rates.
There are a huge range of consequences of having sex at a young age- the UK at least with it's high teenage pregnancy and STD rates suggest young people don't use contraception anything like enough, and for girls not only are they risking pregnancy and nasty infections, they're also increasing their risk of developing cervical cancer.
If you add coercion or manipulation in as well, as seems to be the case in this example, there are more definite psychological implications as well. Being 15 does not mean you can't be abused by an adult.

Better sex education would eradicate most of these problems... My parents were sensible about this and gave me and my sister the facts without doing all that "stork" crap that people still get apparently, but neither one of us learned anything about sex at school from the teachers - all I got was a video on how to check for breast cancer, and people could opt out of that if they were religious, for some arcane reason.

Could you elaborate on that a bit - I'm not sure in what ways the times being different would have much impact on the consequences of adult/child sex. But then again, I'm an old guy.
Unlike when we were young, teenage boys now-a-days have the desire to have sex.

It's because if you get cancer, it means God wants you to die. And you wouldn't want to go against His will would you.

Yes I seem to be living the high life here in my 2 bedroom, $1500 a month disability 'income' which just barely makes me ineligible for any other type of medical care or student grant/loan programs. I fucking ROLLING dude.

Those damn WHAMs...
I think the young should be locked up until they reach adulthood. Not because it would actually help anything, just because I dislike them.
