Fett although it has been pointed out already that the deal may be different for the U.S. to other countries, but down here in Aus one of my best buddies is Lebanese, and he meets some serious racism in the most ridiculous places, whereas your's truly doesn't. It was actually pretty shocking/disspointing to consider the shit stuff that happens when Australia is trying to be all about multiculturalism and getting along post-Cronulla riots.

Yeah - that stuff happens here all the time too, but it doesn't automatically make life peachy for those of us who aren't a poverty-stricken, Islamic homosexual with ADD. It's short-sighted to think that one thing assumes the other. Elderly, upper-class Republican, white folk are the ones who live the high life in America. The middle-class, middle-aged group that I know is almost hand to mouth in most cases. The gap between lower and middle class in the U.S. seems to be closing rapidly, and the middle-class are the ones getting squashed.

Same here. We even have a name for the resulting new class: "Unterschicht"
Use it in any convenient way:
"I heard Peter's business crashed and he went unterschicht...?"
"The unterschicht kept me from seeing the game at the stadium."
"I'm feeling a bit unterschicht today."
etc.
