Alright, I think I've solved it.-
there seems to have been several issues, first that the paging file was too small, also I changed to 800x600 resolution and decreased multisampling to 1. now it works fair but not as smooth as on my old computer.
I really dont get it, how can a reasonably new system have any trouble running a game from 2004 on highest resolution and full detail?

next I will try to get thief 2 to run on my machine and then start a thief marathon (I think my wife and kids will love that :cheeky: )

AFAIK, multisampling is a hard enough feature almost for every graphics card, especially for the low-end one like your Radeon HD 3400. BTW, TDS Engine is slow enough, so please don't expect any speed records from it :).
