The college president had to say pro-Hamas things, because left-wing student mobs are in charge at these colleges. The Senate Republicans can only give her disapproving words. So what?
If she appears a little too pro-Israel in her answers, she would be facing a violent mob of students wearing keffiyehs upon return to her office. They might stand outside her office day and night screaming about genocide. They might even storm her office and do a sit-in, possibly occupying her office until she is forced to resign. And of course the threat of physical violence would always be there.
I assume she would rather take a mild tongue-lashing from Stefanik versus show up at her office and get the shit kicked out of her by left-wing student mobs.

What we're seeing now is the fruits of decades of teaching that the West is the root of all the evils in the world. All those Gen Z-ers making TikToks the other week about how Bin Laden was right are another sign.
Nobody should pretend that our societies are perfect or that our history is all sweetness and light, but there's no shame in proudly asserting the superiority of western liberal democracy over the alternatives. Once upon a time we held these truths to be self-evident.

I don't know the other schools, but I'm surprised about Harvard.

Then again, the ADL and some of the media here think "From the river to the sea" is the same as calling for the genocide of Jews, so maybe the particulars of the accusation are important. But if you take it face value, it certainly deserves a WTF?
I mean, it could be a call to genocide, depending on the context. It all depends on the context. But students generally use it to show support and solidarity, not as a call to kill jewish people. From what I've seen at least.

The problem with that argument is many hypocrites have used it as an excuse to spout the most hate filled diatribes and get away with it.
You see it a lot these days, usually along the lines of:
"When I say this vile and hateful slogan, it's just figurative. But when X people I don't like say something innocuous, it's a dog whistle, they mean XYZ, and they need to be banned from the internet/arrested/ yada yada"
Like, you can say anything, then when you get called out on it, just reply "Calm down bro, I'm just showing solidarity, what's wrong with you?! / I have a right to be angry and express my feelings!!!"

As I said, depends on the context. I mean, you can ban language all you want, and this particular slogan has been criminalised in Germany and other countries, but policing speech based on the words alone will do very little to help anyone. You have to look at the content of the words.

College campuses in the US are very open in terms of free speech so it is very difficult to stop protests and other language and that is both a good and bad thing at times. I went to a state college where you could carry a gun to class even though the state is very liberal but it's a public campus and subject to the laws of open public spaces. It was kind of crazy to think I could carry my Colt .45 to class strapped to my hip. I never actually did but it was a subject of debate here and there.

US colleges find it very easy to shut down conservative speech. They just don't want to shut down pro-Hamas speech.

She apologized after the backlash

Those same universities that style themselves progressive, (
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/11/08/colleges-are-called-upon-review-their-collaborations-saudi-arabia-after-khashoggi) also exchange with a religious fascist state that persecutes women and LGBT people

American university ties with Saudi Arabia take a variety of forms. They include lucrative research collaborations with Saudi universities or companies, fee-for-service consulting relationships in which American colleges assist in the development of new Saudi higher education institutions or programs, and multimillion-dollar gifts to U.S. universities from individual Saudi donors, including members of the royal family.
There was also a professor at some university, forget the name, who regularly attacks Hindus (one of the most oppressed and persecuted communities in the world), and whose job is still safe despite complaints. If she had insulted some other religions or communities, she'd have been sacked immediately.
That says everything you need to know about modern US academia

The crazy thing about young adults on campuses that are supporting Hamas without knowing that they are. They somehow jumped on the bandwagon and mob rule has taken over. You can't pick a side between Palestine based on your political leanings because the politics in that part of the world don't align well with politics in the west, especially in the US. If you are liberal and decide to support strong muslim values you are literally signing your own death warrant. If you are a conservative Catholic you wouldn't support Palestine/muslim values and Israel/jewish christian values and both present religious difficulties for Catholics. But if you are a heathen like me you are too busy investing in Raytheon, Honeywell, McDonell Douglass and Boeing while sipping on a Starbucks coffee.
