US universities before: "We must fight hate speech!"
(
https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitism/article-776763) Universities now: "It depends on the context!!!" :joke:
Quote:
In a high-profile congressional hearing, the presidents of three of the nation's top universities acknowledged that Jewish and Israeli students have felt unsafe on campus since October 7 and said their schools were taking action to fight antisemitism.
But at times the three leaders — from Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania — did not define what kinds of antisemitic and anti-Israel speech could be formally disciplined on campus.
When New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik asked directly if “calling for the genocide of Jews” is against the universities' respective codes of conduct, all three presidents said the answer depended on the context.
“It is a context-dependent decision,” Penn President Liz Magill responded, leading Stefanik to reply, “Calling for the genocide of Jews is dependent on the context? That is not bullying or harassment? This is the easiest question to answer ‘yes,' Ms. Magill.”
Responding to the same question, Harvard President Claudine Gay said, “When speech crosses into conduct, we take action.” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said that such language would only be “investigated as harassment if pervasive and severe.”

Not the first time june gloom has felt it necessary to comment on the skin colour of other forum members, but hopefully the last. Who can forget their vendetta against a mixed race member of the forum, "whiter than Shaun King" I believe was the phrase used. There's only so many times you can make excuses for that kind of behaviour.
Also what's the deal with gentiles telling Jews what antisemitism is? White people trying to define racism for minorities - particularly to the extent of accusing a member of that minority of being racist against their own group - just smacks of white privilege.
A final note: it should have been obvious to anyone that my tag "Jews vs Nazis", which seems to have been deleted by persons unknown, was equating Hamas with Nazis. The idea that it was intended to refer to anyone here is as risible as it is offensive.

I heard this on the way to work this morning and I was stumped by the unexpectedly guarded lawyerly responses.
Here's the Harvard policy:

I think calling for the genocide of Jews could be considered discriminatory harassment or possibly bullying under this policy.
Quote:
Discriminatory harassment is unwelcome and offensive conduct that is based on an
individual or group's protected status. Discriminatory harassment may be considered to
violate this policy when it is so severe or pervasive, and objectively offensive, that it
creates a work, educational, or living environment that a reasonable person would
consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive and denies the individual an equal opportunity
to participate in the benefits of the workplace or the institution's programs and activities.
These factors will be considered in assessing whether discriminatory harassment violates
this policy:
• Frequency of the conduct
• Severity and pervasiveness of the conduct
• Whether it is physically threatening
• Degree to which the conduct interfered with an employee's work
performance or a student's academic performance or ability to
participate in or benefit from academic/campus programs and
activities
• The relationship between the alleged harasser and the subject or subjects of the harassment
Quote:
Bullying may include, but is not limited to, the following behaviors:
• Abusive expression directed at an individual or individuals, such as derogatory remarks,
epithets, or ad hominem attacks that are outside the range of commonly accepted
expressions of disagreement, disapproval, or critique in an academic community and
professional setting that respects free expression. The Policy encompasses abusive
expression or ad hominem attacks that are verbal or nonverbal, spoken or written,
recorded, visual, or digital, including content posted to online platforms, academic tools,
or social media sites. Examples include:
o Performance feedback delivered by yelling, screaming, making threats3 or
gratuitous insults.
o Deliberate and repeated humiliation. This could include actions such as
deliberate and repeated shaming of peers on online platforms in response to
ideas, beliefs, or opinions shared in the classroom.
o Malicious comments about a person's appearance, lifestyle, family, or culture
With that policy in front of her, I expected a straighter answer.
Then again, the ADL and some of the media here think "From the river to the sea" is the same as calling for the genocide of Jews, so maybe the particulars of the accusation are important. But if you take it face value, it certainly deserves a WTF?
