I'm new, brand new, and I'm installing the game on my other computer as we speak. I'm a long time fan ( Arena and Daggerfall ) as well.
I'd like to start a Rogue type class from the start, and possibly a Rogue/Mage class. The emphasis is on Rogue though.
I'm looking for basic newbie advice for all class types, as well Rogue-class-specific advice. My emphasis in gameplay is the ability to experience all the quests without excessive hassle, and I'm a loot hound : ).
Also, what is the best race and Birthsign to supplement the class, and what Specific classes would you recommend ( within rogue) ?
Are there any good links to *must have* mods ( I'm a packrat, ifthat helps ) or sites/forum links with the information that I am looking for ?
And finally ... what are the best tactics for the rogue class, and advancement advice ?
Thanks for the help : )

go for a bosmer, I'd say. Good skills are alteration, illusion, sneak, security, light armour, shortblade. speechcraft, marksman, heavy armour (for when you just *need* to show of that stolen daedric stuff), and a couple of others makes a reasonably good class. Just avoid medium armour - it has the edge at the start but with glass for light and daedric for heavy, its near useless later on. Birthsign is all on playing style - they're all pretty useful and varied.

Doesn't having two armor types in your major/minor skills kinda hinder you at some point? Unless you plan to mix and match (rather than wear a full suit of say glass or ebony), you'll have one skill just sitting there not advancing and no real reason to change your armor other than raising the skills. Whereas if you wear only light armor (or heavy conversely) you're ALWAYS raising that attribute when you go into combat. Just a thought.
Besides the skills listed by Act Smiley, mercantile is worth looking into. You've gotta sell most of your loot, why not get the best price? Although, even with a low mercantile, a thieving player should find themselves with plenty of cash anyway. There's tons of stuff to steal. Good thing nobody wonders why I'm digging through their chests in their bedrooms huh?
Also athletics and acrobatics aren't bad if you like to get to places you shouldn't be.

Too bad levitation makes acrobatics useless for anything but easy leveling. =)

Another question :
I've found a few books at the beginning that raise skills when they are read.
Should I not read those books, and instead waiti until my skills are more expensive to raise through training ? Or does it really matter ?
As a Character, I made a Kijun ( Cat people ) with
Spec : Short, Sneak, Block, Light, Marksman
Trained : Security, Alteration, Restoration, Acrobatics, Athletics
Focus is the Rogue class, main attributes are Agility and Speed
Am I going to run into trouble at any point with such a character ?
And is it possible, realistically, to raise untrained skills to 100 (without cheating) as the game progresses ?

Your skills increase at the same rate irregardless of your level, so I say read away. It'll give you a nice boost at the start without all the work.
I don't see why you'd have any problems with your character. Remember, you're playing it the way you want to. If something is too hard, there's generally no reason you can't come back and do it when you're more prepared. You'll find plenty of other things to keep you occupied in the meantime.
You can raise your miscellaneous skills just as easy as your major/minor skills. The only difference is they raise much slower and they don't factor into you levelling up. Theoretically, you could raise one of your misc skills to 100 before you even levelled once just by using it over and over (or am I wrong on that?).
Hope this helps.

Also athletics and acrobatics aren't bad if you like to get to places you shouldn't be. For some dumb reason I chose Light as a major, and unarmored as minor for my custom Ninja class. Guess I wasn't thinking to hard, and just wanted to play right when I installed it.
Still I am mixing and matching at this point, and both are going up.
