I replay the game for the 2nd time, now I'm in the Yantar. And once again I find this map incredibly atmospheric and creep. Spent about 2 hour there before proceeding to X16, exploring and killing. I think I killed about 20-30 snorks  . I HATE those things, the swamp behind the scientists camp and especially installation where X16 entrance is just swarms with them.
Anyway, all those Kaimanov's emitter effects, both visual and aural, excellent music, creeping creatures and sense of isolation make the location very memorable.

Heh yeah. Usually in games you get told "Ooh place XYZ is so ebil, noone goes there and its totally creepy and dangerous and shit" and then you go there and kill stuff and wonder why whoever sent you didnt do it themselves. Yantar actually gives you that "This place is fucked and i really should do stuff quickly and get the hell out" vibe :o

Red Forest is similarly depressive, but a bit less that Yantar. And then there is quite unfreindly Dark Valley.

Yantar is indeed a great place. Anyone ever tried returning to lab X16's entrance later in the game? Especially if one doesn't remember to bring along the Healing Beril suit the first time, and then has to go there to perform that task for Lukash. That place is a nightmare.

I was there for Healing Beril for Lukash... There was a skirmish between stalkers and zombies. I had to take few zeds and snorks down, but stealing the Beril was a piece of cake. Cleaning the zeds and snorks in the lake area was more difficult.

How it's different from the first visit? As I wrote I killed lots of zombies and like 20-30 snorks before I felt the map was clear, it happened before X16. Some other creatures appear perhaps?
PS: Never mind, BR796164 answered already. I guess pre-X16 the area is considerably more dark and creepy because there isn't a single sane person except 2 scientists in bunker.

Nah, DV has a different atmosphere: lots of bandits, no working Kaimanov's emitter, no music, and no snorks ;)

Some indie staklers come camping near the installation and few Dutyers come to guard the scientists' lab. I wonder why not soldiers?
Otherwise the area is full of zombies and snorks as ever.

Well, to me at least there seem to be a LOT more zombies and Snorks around. Plus, the respawn rate is insane. I'm not talking about the whole of Yantar, just the built area near the entrance to X16 (I actually have no idea of what is that installation supposed to be... some sort of factory?).
Rogue Keeper on 29/10/2007 at 14:37
The installations in which X16 and X18 are do not look nearly as supersecret military installations from outside. More like agricultural institutes, storage facilities and factories - just like Agroprom. If I remember correctly, scientists have established these labs after the Chernobyl disaster once the buildings stopped serving their original purpose - because the buildings looked insuspicious.

I thought that maybe I had fucked up the quest to figure out what happened to Ghost, so I went back after having completed the game (loading to right before going into chernobyl).
From the town, the whole way to X-16 was a fucking NIGHTMARE. There was shit EVERYWHERE, there were monsters I've never seen before (horrible rat things), and those near-invisible telepathic things hurling barrels, bloodsuckers everywhere. When I actually got to x16, there was a horde of zombies fighting stalkers. There was even a brain frier inside, so when running around my vision was all fucked up. There were a bunch of snorks inside x16 too, I was more scared second time around tbh.
