I enjoy video games, but I enjoy my free time as well. I don't want to get this if it's going to kill my social life. I have a friend who plays WoW, and he no longer hangs out with us. So if this game is as time consuming as WoW, I don't want it.

It's not that bad. You may like it so much at first you'll play all the hours you can get, but that won't last more than a week or two I'd say. If you have more self control and limit yourself to a more normal couple hours every day or two, the game will last you a nice couple months.

You're either being sarcastic or you're really not much of a gamer. If that's the case, Oblivion may not be for you; it's open-ended, free-form gameplay tends to confuse or befuddle people new to gaming. (The quest system is better done in Oblivion as compared to Morrowind though, so you won't be completely lost).
Like its predecessor, Oblivion is usually a love it/hate it type game. Some people hate expansive worlds and enjoy linear gameplay. Others enjoy exploration and tons of sidequests. I would tell you to get it--it's a good game.
Do a search on this forum for hours playing Oblivion. There's a thread from a while ago where quite a few people posted how long they've spent on the game. In the first three weeks, I logged something like 100 hours?

You don't have to log hundreds of hours a month, but the sessions themselves pretty much need to be at least an hour, else you won't have enough time to accomplish anything.
I never sat down with Morrowind unless I knew I had at least two hours to spare. Occasionally I went as high as six or seven, but that didn't happen often. Haven't really got into Oblivion yet, but I'm sure it's the same.

I'll say that I, at least, have had plenty of half-hour Oblivion sessions where I got at least one quest or something else important done, though often they'd turn into "just 15 more minutes!" kind of sessions (lasting 45 minutes). So you don't have to be totally hardcore to get into it.
And for what it's worth, I didn't find it that addicting. But I didn't find World of Warcraft at all addicting, so maybe I'm just not the addictive type.

I personally don't like games that require me to follow storylines, ie mmo's. I prefer games that give you the same level of fun and entertainment every time you play it, ie Socom 2. Therefore, I doubt I would like this game.
