Bummer. :erm:
But can it be made smoother by using up all those 19 frames the Dark engine has to offer without having to change the rate? Or are object textures limited to that as well? :o

Making it smoother by adding frames would also make the animation cycle slower. I don't know if that would be considered an improvement.

I see, I was wondering if making the animation have more frames would increase the rate between each frame. This is a lost battle it seems. :eww:

This seems to present a dilemma for FM's and custom work since going heavy on objects means you have to deal with the crappy frame rate. You can get a better frame rate only by working with terrain, which is so much more difficult to create little details with. I think ZB you mentioned before the frame rate for objects is 4...that's...pretty bad, lol. I remember hearing somewhere that for the average person, the illusion of motion is first percieved at 6 FPS

I seem to recall hearing it's more like 15, but I might have actually heard it as 20 or 25.

So, uh, how would the SHTUP team (or any decent graphic designer) feel if I made a request for some hi-res tech textures (that appear in the earth/training level?)... I'd love to put together a sample of how much better they look and see if the response is favorable.

Hmm, there really are so few SS2 FMs that it would almost be possible to just upgrade them all to use the new textures...

Remove the word 'almost' and you got yourself a sentence that speaks the truth. :p

Okay, textures can be replaced without reportalizing, so all missions (both stripped and unstripped) can have textures replaced. What cannot be done without reportalizing is the adjustment of scale, which is basically what would make a high-res texture look, well, high-res.
So texture replacement for unstripped missions will happen just fine. Most terrain textures don't have an offset, but a special few have offsets to look right. I've noticed that the level designers lean toward the use of objects over terrain-based tech panels, so adjustment of said textures will be minimal.
All I really need in order for the community to enjoy some results would be replacement textures and someone willing to betatest (run through level and make sure eveything looks good).

Maybe you could put up or list a few textures you wish to get redone.
