I have tried in the past buying slaves. though i could neither get them to hold stuff for me or have weapons or armor to attack. is there a way to get a companion in morrowind of are the slaves pointless?

Nah, no point unless you want to free slaves by buying & freeing 'em.

Several mod sites offer slaves that come with equipment and will fight for you. "Jessica" is the template that most use. Early on, they may help (but rob you of experience). Later on, they just get in the way and die a lot. Once I got out of the teen levels, I left my so-called warrior slave guarding my house.
But as far as I see, the slaves that are part of the official game are useless, unless part of a quest or that you want to free them. The "Twin Lamps" will appreciate your freeing them, but I've yet to actually gain any profit from this (and it costs to just buy them and free them!). :p
