I'm thinking about getting it. How does it compare to the other two stealth games that came out in '98, Metal Gear Solid and Thief: The Dark Project and stealth games as a whole?

That's the first Tenchu game, right? I think I only played the second and third. Despite also being stealth games they feel quite different from Thief and MGS. More fast paced and platformey I guess. Actually I kinda struggle to think of modern stealth games that have the same kind of gameplay and feel that Tenchu did. If you're interested in going back and seeing where the genre got it's start, I guess it still holds up. Played Tenchu 2 on XBox a couple years back and it was still pretty fun.
edit: actually, I guess Shadow of Mordor and the Batmans feel pretty similar to Tenchu, for modern comparison points.
edit2: and Styx even more so!

I've played the demo of Tenchu 2 on the ps1 and it seemed pretty good. I also emulated the first one to try it out and it was also pretty good. I guess I just wanted to hear what people who beat the first one thought.

The first three games are pretty solid, even if the AI can be a bit daft sometimes. Totally worth it, though :)

I've played the first 2 Tenchu games. All excellent games. HOWEVER. Make sure your playing the PS1 versions as the PSP versions are just HORRIBLE.
Only game I've ever returned. Camera was awful in that port.
Quite good overall as far as stealthy games go. Not on the same plane as Thief/Dishonored more on the lighter side.

I think Ass Creed was also inspired by Tenchu.
Tenchu 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games. They're very "arcade'y" and T1 is very short, but also very replayable. Beware of the tank controls though!
BTW if you're a fan of Rurouni Kenshin (judging by your forum name) then you'll probably love the fact, that the same composer did the music for Tenchu. And Tenchu's music is pretty friggin' awesome ;) .

First Tenchu is Best Tenchu,* And I've played most of them.
It's very rough around the edges, hasn't aged too well, but it's still a fun game. While there's only 10 missions, the location of guards changes, so you always have to remain alert. Plus there's some minor changes depending on which character you choose, so it's highly replayable. The only real quibble I had with it was the forced boss fights. As Severian pointed out, the controls are kinda awkward and not best suited for frantic hack 'n slash melee. Most of the battles aren't too bad, and for those that are, you can always bring a bunch of grenades with you and just cheese it.
*This is, of course, my opinion. Which is correct.

Yeah I am a fan of Rurouni Kenshin (I haven't watched the series for some years now though) so that's awesome to hear! I've heard some of the music and it does sound amazing! Really looking forward to check this game out now! Thanks a lot!

Yes. It's good. I'll sell you a PSX copy if you want lol.
The atmosphere and music are great. The slower pace compared to the later games ratchets up the tension. That said the boss battles are a little out of place, though there are plenty of options to cheese them. The ninjas have a surprisingly robust move set for combat, rolls, and jumps. It's not a game for ghosting particularly - but feels very satisfying to clear a level guard by guard while proceeding unnoticed.
If you want it send me a PM! :)

Well, I appreciate your offer, but I think I'll pass. Nothing personal, it's just that I'd rather buy it from ebay. It's just my preference. But thanks anyways! :thumb:
