I would like the opinions from you guys on this forum because I know you all like Thief and FMs. Is Oblivion anything like Thief? Is the game play fun like Thief? I haven't bought a new game in years, but I'm considereing it. I do not like TDS, so if Oblivion is like it I'll know not to buy it.

You like Thief, but if Oblivion's anything like it, you won't buy it? :weird: Deadly Shadows is Thief!
Err, did that make any sense?

I think heman31 is referring to the fact that he didn't like Thief: Deadly Shadows, and if Oblivion is like Deadly Shadows, he won't buy it, but if Oblivion is like the original Thief or Thief 2, it will be considered to buy.

Wait for the demo, you might not like it! Seriously, wait until there's a demo first!

I'm playing it now. Not bad. But, as I said, there's nothing like Thief to me.
However, there is some Thief mod I installed yesterday - som sort of a side mission I suppose....Must be fun :cheeky:

Once you level up sufficently you can play it like Thief. However the stats for sneaking, and security have to be pretty good. Unlike Thief DS which I played in the 3rd person, Oblivion is badly animated in the third person and has really been made for the first person.
When you crouch, you are effectively in sneak mode and a sneak reticule appears. However as it's a RPG you have to have sufficient stats to avoid detection aswell as pickpocket. You also have chameleon and invisibility spells to help you out aswell as detect life and night eye spells etc. You could play it as a sort of RPG Thief/Splinter Cell hybrid, in the sense though these potions/spells/items give you advantages, just like SC's technology gives you the same.

I think you don't even need those things. A skill of 50 in sneaking is sufficient. Below 50 you have to wear light boots, but from that point on, the weight of your boots don't matter anymore. Finishing the brotherhood quests helps a lot too, because you get some robes and caps that raise you security and sneaking skills, while you get a much better cap by finishing the thieves guild.
There are several fanmods, which make oblivion even more thief-like. First of all there is a Blackjackmod :cheeky:, second a mod with which you can put out torches(water arrows) and candles (just "use" them), third there is a mod which enables you to drag bodies much better. But this is still the standard dragmode of Oblivion only stronger and it doesn't matter anyway if you draf a corpse away, because guards don't seem to be distracted by dead bodies, neither by falling objects and stuff. I hope some modders will introduce that into oblivion, but I am not quite sure wherther that is possible or not.
This game could probably be funny for you... Just try it out! But If you played Morrowind (and mostly if you loved it), then this game is nothing for you, because in exagerated comparison Oblivion is more an "action adventure", than a RPG. It was actually a disapointment in many ways to me, but still a good game!

*Why is all this not in the Oblivion thread?...*:weird:

I'll get the PC version eventually and try the fandmods. I played Oblivion as a Thief and called him Garrett. It was on the XBox360.
As for stats, you still need decent stats to do Thief stuff effectively.
