I bought a creative x-fi extreme gamer about 18 months ago. Recently I've been having problems with my sound - programs will complain about bad drivers, bad codecs or not having a sound card. For example 'GTA4 requires a sound card to play' or 'Bad directsound driver. please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration.' (winamp). A reboot will fix this temporarily and I've never had the sound fail on me while it's playing something - it's like it will only break after a sound-using program is closed.
I've got the latest drivers (though I seem to remember getting some weird 'files you are installing are unsigned and may fuck your OS' error during the installation).
Any eyedeers?
Well, the problem stopped going away after a reboot, and then my network got fucked and autoruns got put on my HDDs which stopped me being able to access the root of my drives through my computer without typing it in the address bar.
Seems pretty likely that I had some virus(es) on there but I've reinstalled Windows (XP SP3 'black edition') and everything seems to be fine now. (I also took out two of my more dodgey hard drives and formatted one of the other ones - my computer was in need of a good tidy up.) I must say, things hadn't seemed quite right on my computer since upgrading XP Lite to SP3 (because of fucking GTA4), this version's SP3 out of the box and I've put NOD32 on it and decided to be a touch more reserved with the overclock, so hopefully it's not going to fuck itself again.
