Im fairly new to the game. I choose a Woodelf Archer. I've been having good luck with a sword, but Im just not getting archery.
For example, can you really shoot someone from far away?
I equip the arrow and bow, put the cursor over a target, but don't really ever seem to hit, then the target has ran up to me and starts bashing in my head...
Am i missing something?
I have a feeling archery in this game is limited to fighting at close quarters with a bow, but, Im not sure...
Any info is appreciated...

Archery has some real plusses and minuses. It works best when combined with either a high Sneak level or a Chameleon spell/amulet/ring. But then again, EVERYTHING in this game could be said to work better with a high Sneak value. Also, I found on my first time through the game that you REALLY need an archery score of about 40 or above before you will start hitting your targets with any consistency.
You really need some enchanted arrows to really make any difference against higher foes (wizards, heavily armed warriors, etc.) Paralysis effect would be especially nice, as it would keep them from moving around and coming after you. Otherwise the target will sniff you out and could be upon you before you can notch your second arrow.
But if you can stay hidden (Sneak, Chameleon) and do some decent damage (especially with enchanted arrows), it can be a great way to avoid melee fighting with a clearly superior foe.

My archer used sblades until his archery was over 75. After that arrows rock. I don't miss, and it takes off more damage than my best short blade. (Iron arrows mind you).
fyi. permabound longbow w/iron or steel arrows(plain) vs. ebony shortsword w/25pts lightning.
Both skills at 100.
I still think my arrows knock down more and take off much more damage. Its a good skill, and damn worth it. Just takes some time to practice. (By the way, get a good bow early in the game. Do a search for "daedric bow" I know i started a thread sometime about it.)
Good luck man,

Yes my woodelf has done quite right by his bow.Early in the game it was imparative to keep distance between him and the foe.
I never had any trouble with hitting my target it was just that it took a whole quiver of arrows to kill some one.I remember it took 60 arrows to kill Venim, must have been that Ebony armour he had:eek:
Iron and silver arows are a must for the more powerful targets, and the Daedric Bow is sooooooo sweet .
A small levitate spell is good to have to get out of a jamn, and mark and recall can give you the time to confuse your enemy.
He wont know where your shooting from. lol was it from his left, no now its from his right!
The biggest draw back is the number of times it takes(early on that is)to drop some one,it realy puts the wear and tear on your bow.(if you plan to go on a long trip and you dont have a good armourer rating take two bows it makes a diff!)
Of course all of these tips where taught to me by my great grandaddy Balour!

Archers are godly... Daedric Longbow + high agility + maxed Marksman skill = constant one hit kills, with a few sporadic two and three hit kills. My character is all but invincible at level 25.

archery is definately worth it..
i play an assassin and i use the bow frequently (not as much since my sneak skill got up there.. it's just something bout creepin right up behind someone)...
but it definitely comes in handy when travelling... keeps pesky animals away...
one shot and most critters are dead.. that's how i practiced my archery skill
walkin from place to place shooting at cliff racers and so forth...
i usually go everywhere with a hundred silver arrows...
good for softening up daedra... put an arrow in one... take a good chunk of health out
when it comes near.. cast soul trap.. quick wack with my sword... voila...
one soul neatly stored away :D

wun on 8/8/2002 at 15:14
i think you can...
but from what i heard it's a pain in the a$$, as u gotta enchant
one arrow at a time... so i haven't even bothered trying

Usually when you nail a target good, or even miss, he/she will charge towards you. If you didn't kill it with the arrow, just pull out a sword, as you say you are good with them. Low-level archery usually winds up to be a close-quarters knife-fight. Like all those hypens, eh? :thumb: Anyway, I use a daedric longbow with dire poison arrows, or iron arrows, and kill a target within a few shots (1-5). I can kill a person with 2 or 3. Only problem is that the dire posion arrows spread the posion around. I was doing the quest for the Fighters guild where you have to clear the rat infestation, and I shot at the rat in her bedroom and poisoned her slightly, making her try to get into a boxing match with me. It has its ups and downs, but then again what form of fighting doesn't? If you do get the Area Effect Arrows plugin like Zaphod posted, then it is located in the Lower Waistworks of the Foreign Quarters canton of Vivec. Quite a few people had a problem locating it, but it's very simple. When you enter the Lower Waistworks, just go to that large square cut out of the middle with the wall that's about waist-high surrounding it. Jump down into the cutout and you should see a banner for a shop. Voila, there's your ticket to enchanted arrows, 59129241 different types of bows, and even a practice archery dummy to shoot at. Have fun with it. :joke:
