I believe the artifact I found only gives a 5% increase in bulletproof cap (and a 10% increase in radiation), which to me would indicate that it only works while using it. Are you saying if I put it on after a fight it will regenerate health? And if I use it while in a fight with no radiation around, will the 5% really help me?
If you have an artifact that gives you 5% bulletproof cap and radiation poisoning, it means that you have the Night Star (if that's the case, good work... I don't think I have ever found one, and the only ones I get are usually given to me as a reward for completing quests). It will only work when you wear it on your belt, giving you a 5% increase in protection against bullets, and at the same time it will slowly poison you with radiation, since it should give you a +5 radiation poisoning (if you look in your inventory while wearing it, you'll notice the radiation yellow bar slowly increasing). The item won't give you any benefit radiation-wise - on the contrary, since the number appears in red, it means it has a negative effect. This means that you'll start losing health from radiation poisoning.
As long as you're wearing that artifact, you will always get that +5 radiation poisoning. You can either find an artifact that will purge the radiation from you (Thorn, Crystal Thorn, Urchin, Droplet, Fireball or Crystal) and wear it at the same time you wear that artifact, or else keep drinking vodka or using anti-rad hypos to get rid of that radiation poisoning. The whole thing about artifacts consists of finding the best combination between them, in order to get a global effect that will suit you in a particular situation. I found out, from some friends of mine playing the game, that they tend to disregard the negative effects of the artifacts when they start playing. They just look at the positive effect, and think a particular artifact is great. Then wonder why the hell is the game so difficult. Later on you'll start finding artifacts that only have positive effects, but those are rarer.
As for the quests, you can perform several quests simultaneously. Refer to your PDA to check which quests are currently active, and which tasks should you perform in order to complete them. A few of the quests - the sidequests - usually have deadlines, and you should complete them within a certain time period (usually one day) or else you'll fail them.

I've gotten a bit further in the game now. I've met Sierlif? killed some bandits to help him, then talked to him about the guy I'm supposed to kill. I then went to the back of this factory where my pointer told me to go, and had a very tough fight with a 6 or 7 guys. Not sure if I explained that well enough, but hope someone gets the idea where I'm at.
Anyway, I'm still getting confused as to what order I'm supposed to do things. Is this one of the special quests that I'm supposed to do? Also I went to find this bar in the area before meeting Sierlif, as I was told by one of the other stalkers but couldn't find it. Did I just not go far enough?
I guess what I'm asking is this. Does it matter how I go about doing these various tasks and what not for people? I mean should I do things in a certain order?
Also has anyone else had a problem with the sprint key. It seems sometimes it will work and other times it won't, which kind of sucks because this is one tough game! I'd also like to ask what people have the crouch, then and crouch even lower keys bound to. It seems very awkward for me to hold down 2 keys at once plus one of the movement or lean keys. Also is stealth really an option in the game, as so far it seems pretty tough?
I will agree though that the game grows on you.

No, you don't have to do anything in this game in a certain order if you have a choice. You just won't have access to some areas if required tasks aren't done. It's up to you to explore and decide what you want to do first and what second. But you should know that all quests are divided (virtually) on main(requred) ones and optional - they are easily distinguishable.

Sprint works flawlessly.... if you know how it works :)
You know about stamina gauge, right? You can't sprint if stamina = zero. When your load is between 50 and 60 kg you tire very quickly, so don't overload yourself.

It's an option, but only rarely. Yes, it's VERY tough in this game, devs better to fix it with a patch.

Thanks for the info.
No, I do know how sprint works. I've been making sure that I'm not overloaded as far as weight as well.
My problem is that it only works about 50% of the time. Not sure what the problem is.
I'll figure it out I guess or get used to it.

Ah, now I see what you mean. Press forward button first, and only while it's pressed press sprint button. If you press them "simultaneously", you actually may press sprint first and forward second.

Thanks. Tried that last night and that did the trick.
I just went underground for that mission and fought some type of mutant thing that was invisible. Lots of fun. That inside area was the most enjoyable part of the game so far for me. Very intense firefight in there.
After I got the info I needed about Sterloc? I needed, I went to help defend some camp for some task I guess, but it keeps telling me that time has run out on this one and that I failed. I may be using too much stealth for these timed missions I guess.
I don't know though, maybe I'm not far enough into the game yet, but to me it kind of feels like Far Cry with clunkier controls, and lesser graphics. To me the crouch and then crouch lower thing is very awkward, and doesn't feel as though they put enough thought into implementing it.
I like the fact that it's more open ended that other FPS's, but it hasn't really "grabbed me" as of yet like a DS or Vampire Bloodlines.

Yes, it feels somewhat like FarCry, but I can't agree about graphics. I think Stalker uses photorealistic graphics, FarCry looks like typical pop product as if it was made by EA: unrealistically oversaturated colours, giant unrealistically looking halos around light sources, plastic toy-like models...
For me photorealistic graphics in such games are better in any way than cartoony.

I played a good bit last night and it's definately getting better. I finally made it to a bar, where I heard about this monolith. That was pretty intriguing shit. Now I have to know what it's about. Got a little more info too about Stalkers in gen, so things are looking up.
Finally got better armor by doing the task, and getting the hang of the combat which has taken me quite a while. I still haven't gotten a stealth kill though. It seems as though they always hear me right at the end. Plus I found a silenced pistol but it seems very weak even if I get off a head shot.
Now I'm off to some lab, but I think I'm going to try and get some guys rifle back first. I want to get a better weapon and if his is really good maybe I'll just keep it, which brings up another thing I'm starting to like.
It appears there are some moral choices in the game too, which is pretty cool. Some guy Snitch wanted me to kill a stalker, but I'm not sure yet if I want to. I don't know. It seems once I got to this bar the game all of a sudden became quite a bit better.
Oh and I saw some mutantpig or something getting sucked up into one of those anomalies. Good stuff.

In my opinion, the game begins for real once you enter the Bar area.

I actually really like the earlier stages of the game, before you get there. You're generally ill-equipped, with weak weapons and armor, and not many useful artifacts. Which means that you have to plan your strategies more carefully, and makes you a bit more wary of your surroundings. By the time I get to the Bar I usually get my hands on the modified Groza OC-14, and begin to feel pretty invincible.
