Definately patch before playing.

Always patch to the latest version. It pretty much applies to any game.

Well I picked up the game, patched, and started playing.
It's actually running pretty well although I do get some stuttering every now and then. Does this "float32" mod really improve performance? If so I may give it a try.
I haven't gotten very far into it yet, however I'm not as impressed as I thought I may be. I got through the first mission to help the trader guy and am now in the area by the railroad tracks on another one of the special missions which I imagine are part of the main story. I tried to sneak through the bridge, but got caught before making it all the way through, and then just sprinted away from the trouble there.
There's a lot of stuff I just don't understand yet though. What are these spikes I have? It said to toss one into an anomaly, but I didn't see anything happen. It seems you can get artifacts by these things so I ran into an area that had some and got a jellyfish thing that seemed like it would hurt me more than help me.
Very interesting premise though, and I especially liked the trader guy. He said some pretty funny stuff.

I think "float32" can help only if you play in dynamic lighting mode. Yes, the game stutters quite annoyingly with low performance video cards, but I'm actually used to it and don't pay attention. Try to lower texture quality, I lowered it to 75% and it really helped, it some areas (Army Warehouses or NPP) I had to reduce it to 50% - apperently 128Mb of my R9800Pro wasn't enough.

I myself wasn't too impressed by the game from the start, but I started to like it more and more while playing. One suggestion: don't rush, take your time and play it slowly and get used to it. It's hard from the start.
As for the spikes - you toss them to check if there is anomaly before you when visibility is bad or you doubt about area of its effect when you need to pass nearby - anomaly activates and you see whrere exactly it is. I didn't use spikes much though, actually I almost didn't use them at all.
Artifacts should be combined to eliminate negative effects of some of them. F.e., there is an artifact that would give you, say, +10% bullet armour, but also +5 "bonus" to vulnerability from radiation. It means that you'll accumulate radiation and start to lose health soon - you need to compensate that "bonus" by an artifact with at least "radiation -5" characteristic.
And don't underestimate artifact bonuses. Even +5% to some ability is a great help in this game - your armour wears down, artifacts not.
For information, there are artifact that give "+100%/200%/400% life" bonus, they don't actually double or quadruple you life gauge, they accelerate life
regeneration.

Yes, and you definitely don't want to walk around wearing one of those. Their negative effects are disastrous, like -10% bulletproof cap, and -10% rupture. I usually have one or two in my inventory, which I use to recover my health after the fights. I never wear them during any kind of fight.

Hmmm.... IMO, wearing "+400% life" (or was it 500 or 600? I don't remember) artifact is a must, once you get good armour taht lets neglect of those negative effects to some degree. Quick (>=400%) life regeneration was more important to me than additional 10% to armour. They are costly for a reason.

I think it's better to not wear them constantly, just have them available in your inventory. You can perfectly get into a firefight with the extra 10% in bulletproof cap, and when in ends then wear a Soul (+600%) or a Meat Chunk (+400%) to regain your health. I definitely don't wear them all the time, as 10% bulletproof cap is a lot and makes a difference. Most of the time, until you get the exoskelleton, you'll be wearing an armor that will give you 40% bulletproof cap. If you wear one of those artifacts you'll be throwing away one quarter of the armor's protection against bullets. And the health recovery rate you get from the artifact definitely won't be faster than the rate you'll be losing health from getting shot at.

I thought those artifacts increased your health by 400%, not regenerate it. . .
I have been taking a long break from the game.

I believe the artifact I found only gives a 5% increase in bulletproof cap (and a 10% increase in radiation), which to me would indicate that it only works while using it. Are you saying if I put it on after a fight it will regenerate health? And if I use it while in a fight with no radiation around, will the 5% really help me?
I just made it into a different area where the game asked me if I wanted to go there and loaded a whole new area. I said yes, and now and told to kill some bandit, however I'm getting confused as which quest I'm on. I'll figure it out, but it seems kind of confusing how they lay out the quests in the game unless I'm missing something.
Thanks for the replies.

Use the map in your PDA to locate quest locations like a guy you have to kill.
