I've been trying to decide between this and Dark Messiah and have even posted about it on the gen board. Well, I decided to go with Stalker.... I think.
After reading some threads here, now I'm thinking of going back to DM especially considering my comp is fairly old. I'll repost my specs here. Athlon 2700+, X700 pro 256, and gig of ram.
From the thread on the gen board, I've heard that others with similar specs have been able to play Stalker. I understand that I'll probably have to play with everything turned down, however I'm not a graphics whore so don't really care.
However I hate to spend what little cash I do have on a game that I won't be able to play because of bugs. So... is it really that buggy and will it be a slide show w/my specs?

definitely no slideshow if you play with the settings.
I say, you can run @ 1024x768 medium settings with static lightning.
also check (
http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_1.html)
where you can learn e.g. that antialiasing and ansiotropic filtering does NOT work (not that I and you could activate it with our vgas)
bugs range from "total crash when entering area xxxx" to "mission status does not update" or "i got killed thru walls" or "I can't see the sky".
if you install all the latest drivers, defrag your harddrive and reboot after install you should be ready.
I myself only experienced some stupid AI bugs and some missions don't get updated in my PDA although I finished them. but the most important thing is that the main quest which propels the story line was all OK for me.
so I was able to get all the different endings, including the "best" ending as well.
sometimes when things looks shitty, just reload the last save and things are sorted out. And believe me, you will LOVE some of the bugs (see my signature).
ah, and did I mention: SAVE & QUICKSAVE are your friends, especially b4 and after changing levels/zones.
(I'm not that quicksave-friend but you will need it in this game)
ah, another tip: STALKER and VISTA do not mix very well, XP SP2 is the way to go, Nvidia should be better as well,
some ATI users did report graphical glitches/errors.

Not if you have a 6200 or a 7300. Both cards have the sky clipping bug, and i have a 6200. And, just by coincedence, my freind has a 7300:mad:

I had a lot less trouble getting STALKER to run decently (or at all) than I did Dark Messiah, but there are quite a bit more in-game bugs, and I actually haven't finished it yet, or even played in a couple of months.

After patch 1.0003 the game is considerably less buggy, and I haven't come across any bug that would make the game impossible to play.

I have, although it was late game. A particular dog in Pripyat crashes the game if it dies.
D'Arcy on 23/6/2007 at 01:16
I don't think I even remember ever seeing dogs in Pripyat... only Snorks and some Fleshes inside the stadium.
Phatose on 23/6/2007 at 01:37
I didn't see em either the first time, but this was the third visit to pripyat after leaving, not a once through to the nuke plant.

I've decided to get stalker and am going to pick it up right now.
Should I just patch up to the latest patch or wait, as it seems some people have played with no patch and not had a problem?
Thanks.
