I'm trying to figure out if it's technically possible to stream my 720p mp4 files shared on a PC to my xbox 360 wirelessly. There's no problem with the codec support. The files play fine if I have the machines hooked up by cable, but when I try to stream them wirelessly, they sometimes skip or lag.
Both devices are not far away of each other. There's maybe 2½ or 3 meters between them. Can the distance matter in relation to speed? Would overclocking the router help? (I'm using DD-WRT on my WRT54GL)

you can try but even the best 300mbps wifi network will have some packet loss, and as far as i know the wifi adapter in the xbox can only manage 54mbps...

Well as I said, I did try. But I got occasional stuttering. So I was wondering if anyone could confirm that there's a technical limit to streaming HD via wireless with the 360 hardware. It's indeed a 54mbps adapter.

Good quality real-time encoded 480i MPEG-2 requires at least 4Mbps, and
more like 6Mbps.
Good quality 720p HD takes at least 12Mbps, and 15Mbps is a more reasonable minimum. Good quality 1080i takes at least 15Mbps, and even 28Mbps isn't enough to eliminate all artifacts (based on D-Theater tape bitrates and quality).
54mbps will only manage 3-4mb/s on a good day, on average its about 2mb/s, so a 360 will only be capable of streaming a standard def TV signal, the fact you getting 720p to stream at all is a miracle. :wot:

I'm not sure but maybe it's because it's a variable bitrate? Haven't checked though. I'm streaming 720p, not 1080i. Also, the files aren't being re-encoded on the fly, they've all been converted with (

the only way I can think of to cure the stutters is to use wired networking on the xbox.

Are you using a A+G or N Router? If not, that is your problem. I am using a 802.11N Dlink router and I can stream 1080p movies with no problem. The video is flawless!!! Before I started using an 802.11N router I had a Belkin Super G Router and I had lag problems. I could not even watch HD movies with it.

well I stand corrected then :cheeky:

I know about the N routers. As stated in my original post, I have a WRT54GL which only does up to 54mbs. I didn't know what the minimum requirement for streaming fluid 720p HD was.

Ah, Gotsent. It took me an age and a day to convert a 720p matroska file to a ps3 readable mp4. :erg:
'Twas worth it in the end, though! Mmm, x264. :D
