You didn't say you would be hauling pirate booty. That changes the complexion of your question entirely. If you had a perfectly legal drive, then yes you would be fine. But if you have one with illegal content on it, then yes you should worry and delete the stuff before you try to ship with it. If you could carry it in your luggage or better yet a carryon bag then you may not need to worry quite so much, provided you throw in a few other PC parts to explain having a hard drive. Just be careful about being very clear about what it is and tell airport security about having that in your bag BEFORE you put it through an x-ray. A jumble of boxes, wires and circuitboards can look like a bomb these days, after all.
Or you could just shred all the illegal stuff on there and assume they won't be digging too deep. Don't just use windows recycle, poke around on google for something a bit higher grade.
