Is it ok to ship personal hard drives across borders? I'm in Japan and am waiting to get a hard drive from the US. Are there any customs regulations that will delay it? How likely is it they'll pick through the contents?

Couldn't give you anything statistical, but there was one case where they smashed a girl's hard drive when she was taking it into Rrance.

What company did you use to ship it? It really shouldn't be a problem , we have shipped lots of our electronics over seas. The chances of them looking through it is also low they really couldn't care about that stuff usually , the only problem I can think of is they may x - ray it.. that might cause some problems.

You shouldn't have a problem, last year while I was in the US I shipped two laptop hard drives home to the UK, there was no evidence of tampering.

Only problem would probably be hazardous chemicals.

What, is it prohibited to send pron overseas? ;)

The hard drive has a few adult videos, no more than 5 vids. Quite a few movies, a bunch of DVD rips, apps and game iso's. The person who sent it doesn't know anything about encrypting but I've heard no one bothers looking at it anyway.

Depending on what jurisdictions it passes through. Some, like Canada, have extremely broad definitions of child pornography. It's not worth the risk.
Similarly, encrypted files or partitions may be grounds to confiscate a drive or storage device.
Illegal Copyright material might get you in trouble too. If this drive is crucial it would be best to purge (shred, not delete) any questionable material.
