I only recently got my own Internet connection, and have since joined four or five web-communities I had only been able to ghost before. And I can immediately tell that TTLG is by far the place i prefer and feel most comfortable in. I consider some of the veteran posters here old acquaintances, even though they dont have spit of a clue who I am.
People here are so civil, and from what I've seen grammar and correct, understandable writing is a must here.
There is so much humour shared between the chatters. So much spare time spent on writing stories or photoshopping pictures solely for the enjoyment of the other members. The Moderators and Forum Administrators answer questions and participate in the chat and contributions on equal terms with everyone else.
I remember during the TDS anticipation, how Xbox players came into the Thief Forum to gloat about their early release, and how the moderators verbally whipped them out there as much as everyone else did, while ignoring their fellow PC-player's rude remarks. Thats when it first occurred to me how thightknit this community really is. How close and personal we all are.
Ive seen nothing that even comes close to it in the other communities. There the VIPs and moderators are swift and terrible executioners, closing threads and delivering biting words for the slightest mistake you make. There I feel oppressed, afraid to say something wrong and be flamed or banned. But here its different. Its safe and peaceful.
Is it really common with communities where people are this close to one another, where nearly everyone is this polite and patient?

TTLG is definitely one of the friendliest forums I have been on. I mean, even though I am a bolshy sod and regularly make a total arse of myself on here, people are still willing to help me out with techy stuff and game recommendations, and also when I am on IRC they are very pleasant (although they may badmouth me as soon as I am gone, who knows).
The people who are drawn to TTLG are the same kind of people who are drawn to Looking Glass games. And those games, due to their nature, attract a certain kind of person. As a general rule, fora reflect their subject matter, and so cool games give you cool people.

It gets grumpy when people don't fit in, or behave as they would on "other" forums, though. And perhaps has a little too high opinion of itself.
But it's also very wide-ranging and great. And there are lots of little mini-communities within it: for instance, the Editor's guild, Comm Chat & Thief & Shock Gen forums each have their own little 'circles'.
Perhaps this all says something about the average Looking Glass fan.

I agree.
It does get a bit snappish and awkward occasionally, but even then it's a lot better than many forums I've been acquainted with.
Personally, I doubt I could leave even if I wanted to, since TTLG was about the 3rd website I ever visited, ever, and I've been here ever since.

This forum has developed its own kind of culture. It's changed somewhat, but I still like it. Though I don't participate as much as some, I still feel a part of it. It's pretty much my one-stop-shop for internet culture, for better or worse. At this point I wouldn't know where the hell to go if TTLG closed its doors. Probably wander around IRC somewhere...

Yeah, there's the whole IRC crowd too. I've only been there once or twice.

What is this IRC? Sounds like a place to visit.

Internet Relay Chat. Source of all stupidity.
