Sorry if this has been asked a million times, but I always wondered.
It seems implied that it's at least "possible" that the nameles hacker from SS1 could also be "goggles" from SS2 albiet he would be a bit older since SS2 takes place (42 years?) in the future. Then again with nanites and regenerating technology it's not very far fetched that people can live much longer lives... provided of course that they aren't turned into some horrible mutant or cyborg creature by a crazed AI :eww:
Is there any good solid evidence in the games logs or backstory to support or deny a link between the two protangonists? I read through all of the chronology, but maybe I missed something more "direct" about it being the same character. It seem pretty ambigious. The only thing that just doesn't make sense is the hacker enlisting in military service later in life (unless he either grew out of his "rebelious phase" or had secret motives for doing so... neither of which seems indicated anywhere)
As it stands I just assume that he is... just cause thats the way I like it! :D
Thanks for any pointers!

I guess the fact you start as a level 0 character without all the cool stuff you got/learned from SS1 goes to show it is not the same person. Also, strictly statistically, you should also be a different person.
I don't recall seeing anything that would make me thing that Goggles is Hacker either.

There's no sensible reason to assume that Goggles is the hacker but I'll do it anyway ... just cause thats the way I like it! :D
Keep reaching for that rainbow! :thumb:

It seems implied...
No. No it doesn't. Not only is there absolutely zero suggestion in the game that Goggles is the hacker, there is considerable evidence against it. First, it would make Goggles about 65 years old. Second, SHODAN would have recognized her old nemesis. And third, even if the hacker were somehow a grunt stationed on the Rickenbacker, it's excruciatingly unlikely that SHODAN would have randomly selected him to be her avatar.

Yeah O.K. I am sort of reaching. It was just a neat idea that maybe the same hero defeated Shodan twice, but Zylonbane does raise a good point about Shodan not recognizing Goggles as the hacker.
The other 2 points I'm not so sure of.
65 years may not mean a whole lot in SS universe given the amazing medical technology (after all you can regenerate a whole body for the pricely sum of what 15 nanites... that's the cost of 5 sodas haha.
and
There's nothing to say that for whatever reason Shodan did not RANDOMLY select him. In fact if she did know it was the hacker then she would immediatly realize that there was a very high probablity that he could accomplish the goals she needed him to do... also she does have some revenge to dish out. Maybe she had an elaborate ploy to use him and take back revenge for Citadel station only to find that her evil plan backfired on her. Of course the storyline doesn't actually support this... so... :erg:
Ah well back to my rainbow heh

The intro- and endmovie of SystemShock is for me the reason to say that the hacker can't be googles ;)
The hacker is knowing that he is doing something illegal and even after the events at Citadel Station he won't stop. I just can't imagine, that a guy like he is joining the UNN to be a soldier.

Not to mention that it would be highly unlikely that he'd ask to join a force under the command of an Edward Diego relative.

I'd have to say the most obvious argument against it was the one ZB mentioned - Shodan not recognising him. What was it, "I detect a 97.933% probability that you are aware of my birth on your planet and my rebirth into glory on Citadel Station"? Words to that effect. Makes it obvious that at the very least Shodan didn't know he was the same guy. And I think we can assume that Shodan would recognise him.
Although maybe more compelling than that is the fact that absolutely nowhere in the gameis there the slightest suggestion that it's the same character.
I guess what'd do it once and for all was if I could be sure that the implants the hacker got at the start of SS1 were permanent. Cause he definitely doesn't have them at the start of SS2. Dunno if anyone can confirm that for me?
Either way, it shouldn't matter - common sense tells me they're not the same person :p

O.k. O.k. you guys beat up my idea pretty good there. I guess it does seem a little silly under close scrutiny. (maybe Goggles is Hackers son! no? Come on give me some hope here! sigh... oh well :( )
Hey there's my n! I thought I had lost it!
Sometimes my fingers move a little faster than my brain. Which really isn't all that fast to begin with. ;)
