Hello!
Is downloading Sshock1 CD version a crime? Its abbadonware. If it is not a crime than where I can get it (torrents?, warez? or other sophisiticated sites? :P)?

Technically, it is. While SS1 is considered to be abandonware here on TTLG, it is still technically illegal to download abandonware, since it has not been released into the public domain.
From the
big red FAQ at the top of this forum:
Quote:
But isn't abandonware illegal?Unfortunately, yes. Despite the fact that publishers no longer derive revenues from these games since they have stopped selling them (and any revenues from retailers that still sell them were gained a long time ago, at the time of sales), it is illegal to distribute them so long as copyright holders have not released them into the public domain, and 95 years after the games' release have not elapsed.
Taken from the underdogsThe FAQ also lists download locations, though for some reason it
does not list the best one, namely (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,211.0.html) System Shock Portable.

The game isn't even really protected. I think the cyb.cfg file is the only thing that tells it that it is running a CD. I'm not certain of the layout of SSP, since I don't have it installed. I can help you though, if you can obtain a CD copy of the game!
Does your PC have a FAT32 drive, or are you using some custom partition type for Ubuntu? I'd recommend booting DOS if you can, even if you need to dualboot and have a FAT32 partition, because it might make your life a _lot_ easier.
You do what you want though, it doesn't matter to me.
How to make System Shock 1 run without the CD:
1: Install it from the CD like normal. This will configure the game and do all the things needed to make it work right. If it's already installed, skip this step :)
2: Copy all the contents of the cd:/CDROM/DATA into your SSHOCK/DATA folder.
3: Copy cdshock.exe and sshock.exe into SSHOCK/DATA folder.
4: Open cyb.cfg in a standard text editor and look for the line cd_data_dir_path and change the path to \data
The line should look like "cd_data_dir_path \data"
5: Change your sshock.bat and cdshock.bat accordingly:
cdshock.bat: data\cdshock.exe
sshock.bat: data\sshock.exe
That will be all you need to do.
SSP should already be configured like that though, so all you need to do is run cdshock or sshock file from the root of SSP and it should work. I've never used Ubuntu, so I'd recommend either dualboot to DOS/Win9X, or find a darn good virtual PC type program, and install it that way.
Speaking of which, I got SShock1 to run on Windows Vista through Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. It actually worked. I can't even begin to tell you how awesome it was to see two Microsoft programs play nicely with each other!

Shock is a dos game so you need to run it with dosbox and not with wine.
just type dosbox ./cdshock.exe (don't run the SSP.exe with wine, it won't work of course)

Ty eddy! Your way to do it was better (cuz more the puzzle was simplified)... but they are some disadvantages..
-its fullscreen (I prefer to open a internet browser while playing to sitting in one window, but its ok..)
-no music.. but i have a mp3 player whit Sshock 1/2 music tracks on it.. so, it is not a problem... but on the other side, my ears will be in mess when i'll do it constantly (yeah... ss1 is a cool game :p ). I think its the time to buy better earphones xD

You can change the fullscreen setting in the dosbox.cfg in the same directory.
You can also switch between fullscreen and windowed by pressing alt+enter.
edit: You can also get the music to work by changing the "midi_card" entry in your cyb.cfg
Values of 1, 2 or 4 seem to work fine.
