I don't understand the argument that rhythm or lead guitar is harder than bass. It's only as hard as you make it for yourself. Yeah, bass players can just play root notes and bore themselves to death, same as a rhythm guitarist can play power chords. Good bass players make it interesting for themselves and the band by playing outside chords and then coming back into the progression or playing counter-melody.(

Fucking lead guitar players.
Oh, it is a guitar, man.

i refer to mine as a "bass", sometimes a "bass guitar", but, in over 15 years of loving the bass, i've never called it simply a "guitar", but i suppose it is.

I suppose while this terrific debate is raging on, I could tell my humble story ... At the jazz festival I went to a few weeks ago, the final act was a great funk band (George Duke of Dukey Stick fame) with a very talented electric bass player. The whole time the band was throwing out lots of in-jokes and homages and just being very funny and entertaining.
At one point in the set, the older members of the band wanted to "teach" the young drummer the roots of the funk they were playing, so the bass player kept going back in time in style through famous funk/jazz electric bass players as the singer shouted out their names, all of them virtuosos, until the singer finally shouted Charlie Mingus and he propped his bass guitar upright and started playing it double-bass style. it was a funny moment that this thread reminded me of. The bass player didn't get far though before he had to just shake his head and say "nah" ... that's a little too far.

He's also the best keyboard player Frank Zappa ever had. I've never heard his solo work, but his playing with Frank is nothing short of amazing.
