yes i'm a bassist. I don't call or think of myself as a guitarist. But it is a guitar. A bass guitar. a bass is a fish.
in bands that have a rhythm guitarist do you call his instrument a "rhythm"? do you call an electric guitar an "Electric"?
i have honestly never heard of any problem with calling it a bass guitar.

No, because they are playing guitars. You do not play a guitar. You may play a guitar someday, but right now you play bass.

Technically.. an electric bass guitar is a guitar. Leo Fender invented it when electric guitars were getting popular. If it was a Bass in the traditional sense it wouldn't be tuned like a guitar is. A String bass starts with an A not an E.
and who says you can't shred on a bass? Lookit primus! it sounds different but its still challenging as hell! :eek:
